Lucia di Lammermoor

In 1839, Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti first brought his story of deceit, betrayal, madness and murder to a packed Parisian opera house. Audiences loved Lucia di Lammermoor then, and today’s opera enthusiasts prove that hasn’t changed; Donizetti’s play is one of the most performed in the country. The Wikipedia plot: When Lucia’s lover, Edgardo, must leave the country for political reasons, her family conspires to make Lucia marry another. Lies, forgery and many of Lucia’s tears later, Edgardo returns just in time to see her at the altar with another man. A tragic tale of star-crossed lovers set to a score that has been hailed as “hypnotic,” Lucia di Lammermoor ’s wicked storyline and abundance of violence just might spark the interest of a whole new generation of opera-lovers. The performance will be sung in Italian, with English subtitles.
