Hypertext Links

Text that is in color or underscored may be a "hypertext link." Click on this text to jump to a new location in ocweekly.com. Often, you can also click on graphics to see larger pictures.

Navigation links

At the bottom of each page, you'll find a row of text links representing the different departments of ocweekly.com. To visit a specific department, click on the appropriate link.

Multimedia Icons

We no longer use symbols to designate the use of multimedia. This is the Web. We'll offer links, audio, video, games, and the like as often as we can. You'll just have to browse to see what we have.

Tools

You need a few things to fully enjoy ocweekly.com. Don't worry. They are all free.

Browsers

There are many out there that will work just peachy — and you must have found one or you wouldn't have made it this far — but we can only promise best results with the usual suspects:
FireFox - Version 2 or higher
Microsoft Internet Explorer - Version 6.0 or higher
Google Chrome - Version 1.0 or higher
Safari - Version 2.0 or higher

Plug-ins

These are mini-programs that further extend the power of your browser. For now, we chiefly utilize:
Macromedia Shockwave Flash - Allows for all sorts of multimedia, including audio, animation, and interactivity. It takes just a few minutes to download. Do yourself a favor and get it.

Apple QuickTime - Used primarily for video clips. Built into later browsers.

JavaScript

Scripting built into later browsers. Leave it turned on because we've been known to play with it. What? You don't know what it is, much less, how to turn it off? Good. Don't worry about it.

Audio

To play music in your web browser (Netscape Navigator, Internet Explorer), you'll need some sort of plug-in. There are many streaming music players available online. We recommend Apple's QuickTime software, which handles over 200 types of audio and video media. It's available as a free download for Windows and Macintosh computers. Just click on the logo:
