OC Grub Guide for April 14-20: Flapjacks, Farmer’s Market, Pizza And Pinot!

Hello, almost weekend! Is it us, or is there a lot going on this Saturday? This week’s options run from free to $$$$, so take your pick and bring your appetite! Oh, and Hatch inside Tustin’s Union Market is officially open this afternoon. No, really.

Grow Your Own! Spring Festival at The Ecology Center
Tucked away in San Juan Capistrano is one of the county’s best kept secrets. Get to know The Ecology Center a little better Saturday at this free event. Purchase organic seedlings, pick strawberries next door at South Coast Farms and learn how to pickle foods. Demonstrations and kids activities will also be available. We’re looking forward to live tunes while we visit the chickens. Bonus: attendees will receive a discount on future Ecology Center events.

DTSA Farmer’s Market Reopening
The DTSA Farmer’s Market in downtown SanTana has been on hiatus since last summer, but it’s coming back with a bang this Sunday. Same location as before—corner of Third and Bush streets (in front of the Yost Theater), but with new vendors. Happening from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and will continue FOREVER. More info at www.dtsafarmersmarket.com

Pizza 90 Anniversary in Irvine
Folks over at Pizza 90 are ecstatic to reach their first anniversary. Considering they’ve only got one other location (in the 909’s Riverside), the neighborhood’s given them the thumbs up! Celebrate with them on Saturday, as they mark down their pies 50% and offer brews at happy hour pricing. All diners will receive a gift card with their purchase, and hangry eaters get to hear live music between 4:30 and 8 p.m. If you arrive for dinner, they’ll be raffling off swag and free pizza for A YEAR. Pizza 90 is located at 5365 Alton Pkwy, Ste I; (949) 387-5088.

Fleming’s Perfect Pairing – Newport Beach
Oneophiles will head down to Newps for serious surf and turf wine pairings this Saturday. Courses include sea scallops with La Crema Pinot Noir and a duo of dry-aged and wet-aged prime ribeye with Freemark Abbey Cab. Per Wine Director, Maeve Pesquera, “Pairing should really enhance the enjoyment of both the food and the wine, and how they play together.” Pricing is $95, and interested parties should call ahead for a reservation.

Bosscat Kitchen Flapjacks and Fried Chicken – Newport Beach
While most kitchens may pair waffles with chicken, Chef Peter Petro at Bosscat believes the proper duo involves pancakes. He’s gonna prove his point this Sunday, as Bosscat serves its first of many suppers. This family-style, three-course feast will run you $30. And for an extra $10, you’ll receive either a duo of bartender’s choice beer or cocktails. Service begins at 5 p.m., and we hear seating is limited. Go for it!
