Anaheim is paying its former city attorney $750,000 and the law firm that represented her $700,000 to settle her discrimination case against the city in federal court.
Cristina Talley, who was hired as city attorney in 2009, claimed she was forced by the Anaheim City Council to submit her resignation on Jan. 31, 2013, because of workplace issues and age and race discrimination. (She is a Latina.)
Anaheim retained a law firm that concluded there was no merit to Talley's discrimination complaint.
“Cristina Talley is very pleased with the settlement, though no amount of money can fully compensate Ms. Talley for the damage caused by her meritless termination,” her attorney, Rosemarie Lewis, told the Orange County Register.
Anaheim spokesman Mike Lyster countered that the city settled to avoid a costly legal battle.
Up to $1 million of the settlement will be paid by the city's insurance fund.
Talley agrees not to bring any future claims against Anaheim with her dismissal request.
