The Book of Mormon

The 2011 Broadway favorite, The Book of Mormon, swept that year's award season, snatching up nine Tonys, five Drama Desk awards and even a Grammy in 2012. And while snobby theater-goers had previously scoffed at any play-wrighting that could come from the famously crass South Park duo and a co-creator of Avenue Q, they found themselves scrambling for tickets. What they discovered was the story of two naive Mormon boys on their religious mission to war-torn Africa, who settle in a poverty-stricken village suffering under the rule of a villainous warlord obsessed with female circumcision. And you know something? It was damn funny. Much like the play's eventual message that the exact details of a religion don't matter quite as much as the power it has to help peopleā€”it's not so much what you say, but how you say it.
