Mandolin player Avi Avital, whose astonishing virtuosity has established him as a star on the international classical music scene and a driving force behind the reinvigoration of the mandolin repertory, joins Les Violons du Roy in works by Bach and Vivaldi.
Les Violons du Roy takes its name from the celebrated court orchestra of the French kings. It was founded in 1984 by Bernard Labadie, now styled founding conductor, and continues under music director Jonathan Cohen to explore the nearly boundless repertoire of music for chamber orchestra. Their performances match as closely as possible to the period of each work’s composition, as its minimum fifteen-member complement plays modern instruments, albeit with period bows for Baroque and Classical music, and its interpretations are deeply informed by the latest research on seventeenth- and eighteenth-century performance practice.
An exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist, Avi Avital has released four recordings for the label including his ECHO Klassik Award-winning Vivaldi (2015). Avital’s inspired music-making has electrified audiences in performances around the world, and has appeared with orchestras such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Deutsche Symphonie Orchester Berlin, Israel Philharmonic, St Louis Symphony Orchestra and Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal under conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Kent Nagano, Osmo Vänskä, Ton Koopman and Giovanni Antonini. Performances have taken him to Beijing’s National Centre for the Performing Arts, London’s Wigmore and Royal Albert Halls, Berlin Philharmonie, Zurich’s Tonhalle, Paris Philharmonie, and New York’s Carnegie Hall, among others.
