Best Local Indie Book Publisher Run Out of Someone's Home

Run by curator and guy-who-knows-everybody-networking-genius Kevin Staniec, small press 1888 Center hosts a yearly novella contest (The Plaza Literary Prize) and a Summer Writing Project, with the winners of each getting their books published. They host a regular half-hour podcast about keeping the creative process an honest and urgent one; have conversations with creatives in historic Eichler tract homes throughout OC; write about local history and architecture in “Small Town Short Stories”; and illuminate the process of writing with web projects such as “Routineology” and “Where Books Come From.” We suspect Staniec drinks too much coffee to make it all happen, but we welcome his sacrifice: He's encouraging people to read.
