In a world where some people (jerks) think woman are either funny or beautiful but can't be both, Amy Schumer proves them wrong. After getting robbed on NBC's Last Comic Standing (she came in 4th place, WTF is that about?), her rise to popularity came fast over the last eight years and Amy has really come into her own and perfected some daringly dark comedy that you just can't help but laugh at. With a sweet look, sexual edge, and a sharp tongue, it's easy to see why she quickly became one of the viewer's favorites on the Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen and was tapped for roles in TV and movies like Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, 30 Rock, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Amy will be supplying some awkward hilarity at the Comedy Central Roast of Roseanne Barr this Sunday and with her hour long special, “Amy Schumer: Mostly Sex Stuff” on August 18th but before all of that, she coming to the Irvine Improv on August 10th and11th (Friday and Saturday) to supply you the laughs live!
OC Weekly (Ali Lerman): What was your last job before you started stand-up?
Amy Schumer: Before I was making a living as a comedian I worked sorting mail. I also did a lot waiting tables and bar tending. Then I got into stand-up and starting making a living on that pretty quickly.
Would you say that your “big break” was from Last Comic Standing or being on Comedy Central?
I think I would say…Comedy Central because I taped a special for them before I did Last Comic Standing. Last Comic gave me a lot of exposure but I was like 23 or 24 when I was on there so I was really young with who I was as a comedian back then. I was dark then but now I am a 31-year-old woman who's been having sex for like 20 years and dating so it's more adult because I'm more of an adult.
And you just did the Roseanne Barr roast so give us the goods, who was the funniest on the dais?
Me! [Laughs.] I always think the comedians do the best. The only person I have been really surprised by was Cloris Leachman who blew my mind. I remember when she did it I was like, oh my god that was so fucking amazing. Jeff Ross, Anthony Jeselnik, and Gilbert Gottfried did a great job at this one. Gilbert totally murdered it. I'm excited to see that again. I was in pain I was laughing so hard. I go first and I kick it off, I'm really proud of what I did. At the end one of the writers wrote a joke for Roseanne about how my set was bad and she said it and then she stopped and said, “No I don't want to say that because it's not true. I think Amy had a great set.” Just that she stopped and took 30 seconds to pay me a compliment, it made me cry. It was really special to me to do that roast.
I loved the cameo you did on the TV show Louie last week with the O&A boys. How did that come about?
They just asked me to do it and I was like, “Great!” I do the Opie & Anthony show a lot and it's really comfortable and really fun. So we just went in and I think it took all of ten minutes. They were like, we need a woman in there who's really annoying. I do so much morning radio that I was like, I know this girl!
And you hang out with them outside of work, how did you end up becoming such great friends?
It's funny because I was very aware of O&A because my sister loved them, but I didn't listen. I met Jim Norton at the Comedy Cellar and then I started opening for him on the road and he was like, come do the show. The guys had seen my stand-up and thought it was funny so I didn't go in there cold. They weren't like, “Ughhh who's this girl coming in?” They wanted me to do well, they really support me. They're my favorite people to be around and the Comedy Cellar comics. Those are my brothers. We're of the same cloth.
Any hooking up in this circle?
Oh no. Anthony Jeselnik is the only comedian I've ever slept with. There has been zero horse play. I think they look at me as their sister too although, I'm pretty sure they'd all fuck their sisters. [Laughs.]
My parents actually said they wanted to come see you at the Irvine Improv but don't worry, I advised them otherwise.
Oh no! [Laughs.] It is not a family show. Don't blame me if they go, I am not taking credit for that! It'll be a ballsy, funny, and fearless hour of comedy. My openers are great too. Leave the children and the elderly parents at home!
