28 Days Later

Much of the current zombies trend—a new Resident Evil is out this week, The Walking Dead series starts on AMC next month—can be attributed back to 28 Days Later, the nouveau horror classic from Trainspotting director Danny Boyle. Sure, they’re not technically zombies, since they’re living humans infected by a rage virus, but the same principles of banding together in the face of looming disaster remain (even if these “zombies” are fast instead of the traditional slow and plodding). Since the film’s 2003 domestic release, star Cillian Murphy has been featured in huge hits—like this summer’s Inception—and Boyle helmed a feel-good Best Picture winner called Slumdog Millionaire. All of this makes 28 Days Later a pretty perfect choice for a midnight screening in this still zombie-obsessed society.
