Where the Black People At In OC?

If Orange County were separated from Los Angeles and considered its own metropolitan area (and isn't it about time? There's only about 3.1 million of us, you know), we'd rank as one of only two metro areas in the nation's 25 largest with an African-American population of less than 5 percent--and we'd clock in at a pathetically low 2.1 percent. Of all of OC's many embarrassments, this is by far the worst--2.1 percent? In the 21st century? In a county that's otherwise wildly diverse? WTF?

Yet when we at the Weekly point this out, we get a collective shrug from OC residents, or mumbled excuses about how black people don't want to live here because black people don't live here. Or, better yet, pointing out the lack of black folks brings us accusations that we're racist for bringing up the subject in the first place. Stay classy, Orange County!

Gustavo: are you seriously letting this pass for journalism? This begs a number of questions: why are Inuits underrepresented in OC? Perhaps 3rd generation 'Sansei' feel like they don't have a voice, either.

Who wrote this pap? (the same guy who penned a RZA music review, and found it "ridiculous" that he just won a chess tournament?). Where was the outcry? Gustavo: carnal, I'd read your column(s) even if they were posted underneath an OCJ toilet. This is pure race-baiting nonsense...

I was born in OC, I'm (at least) a 5th gen Californian, and I'm 1/8th Gabrieleno Indian (listed on the 1972 BIA Judgment Roll) so I'm about as "native" as one can get and qualified to speak my piece.  The amount of racism I see on this board pains me.  You transplants (or "out of staters," as my mom used to call them), may think you're being cute uttering some racist "foreigners out" BS but it doesn't make you any less "foreign" to a true native like me than if you had just moved here from the Bronx so STFU.  Please take your racism and ignorance back where it came from.

To answer your question, most of the blacks in OC are in jail where they belong.

Mexicans are the biggest racists and they only like their own kind. In Mexico , blacks are commonly regarded as subhuman. Mexico kept black slaves. Even today, there are cartoon characters making fun of blacks. Black friends have told me that Mexicans and other hispanics are being brought into the US to crush the blacks. Remember the murder of Trevan Martin by the Latino thug George Zimmerman, that is the plan.

Blacks had a better deal in Los Angeles or later on in the inland Empire. Blacks are declining in the state for greener pastures in other states. OC now basically attracts immigrants and even whites now are coming from the expensive north east rather than the mid west since its expensive. Mexicans and Asians were in the county a little more than Blacks because it was rural until about 1965. Irvine was a big Orange Grove until about 1970.

I think you need to get out more.  I see plenty of African-American at Fashion Island.  I had a really nice chat with a African American grandfather, who like me was waiting at starbucks for his family to finish shopping.  We exchanged war stories, talked about our favorite foods (Mexican for both of us), and really connected there.  Him, African-American, me Caucasian European blend, and we exchanged biz cards.  So, let's not be so cavalier to make an article like this.  African American people, like all races, live in all areas of the USA, and that is what makes our country great.

What a load of crap. What's with the obsession of diversifying blacks everywhere? Why don't we talk about the lack of Chinese, Indian, Thai, Italian, Irish, or Muslim populations? We don't seem to have an urge to brand everyone a racist when their city doesnt' have an "ample population" of those groups?  There is no law stopping Blacks from moving to the OC if they want.  No one cares about neighborhoods that predominate with any one race unless it predominates white--- then they become a god forsaken homogenous racist entitiy that MUST be diversified with black people. This endless & meaningless guilt trip on whites needs to end once and for all.

What about the abundance of Vietnamese in the o.c. I love going to the asian garden mall and chowing down, walking around. They are the perfect immigrant community because they hate commies, work hard, and don't give a damn about my race like I don't give a damn about theirs.

I think every country could benefit from a time of french rule. The Vietnamese certainly did......the best food on the planet earth.................MMMmmmMMMmmm

The lack of diversity stems from a long time ago even before I was born blacks were not accepted in Orange County and I think over time while blacks have come to the OC there still are not as many as there should be. I mean honestly OC discriminated against everyone that was not white at one point or another and still do.

I'm trying to figure this out.

A feature compilation about blacks in Orange County (or lack thereof) contains a story about 'Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles', thus associating that culinary creation with African Americans.

But the same compilation has a story about how UCI is 'racist' because the food service people there served Chicken and Waffles on a day associated with African Americans.

Quite the contradiction.

Uh, deleting from a 'purchase list' is not 'banning'.

Believe it or not, before his apotheosis, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Ph.D was a highly controversial figure. His Civil Rights movement did real damage to a lot of traditional American rights -- for example, the right to sell your house to who you want, hire who you want, associate with who you want. Further, it is entirely plausible that some of King's latter pronouncements contributed to the 'unrest' of the mid to late 1960s, which resulted in lasting damage to entire American cities (not to mention the cleansing of white ethnics from said cities).

The board was perfectly within their rights and duties to decline to celebrate the man.

What an ignorant article on so many levels. I have been an HB resident my whole life and I work my ass off to stay here. I don't get mad at the hamptons because I don't live there!! OC weekly must really be running out of topics. If you want equality then lets live as one and stop this outdated issues. I'm sorry but I see an extreme mix here And I don't agree on the view. Racist? Really? I don't care who my neighbors are but I'm sorry I'm not going o feel bad because someone's trying to cause unneeded problems that don't make sense or need to be. If you want to stop racism the stop talking about it and live equally don't pic and choose.

Reading these comments i would come to the conclusion. Yes there is a serious issue with racism in orange county. Regardless how well written and educated the commentary comes off you can feel theit prejudices. Living here in the OC. Most African Americans i would say are hard working and decent people, my dad and i included. As for me being the product of a east Asian woman i am not too surprised by the incidents that occurred at UCI. The surprise that comes is how blatant arrogance of it. One thing is for sure lucky UCI doesn't have much of college sports. Picture how and incident like this at UCLA or USC.

@jmilber   I'm black. I recently moved to the OC. There are very few blacks from what I've seen. I won't stay here long. People tend to stereotype, based on ignorance. That's human nature. People who are more enlightened tend to understand that people are people. We are all human beings who are descendants of Africans. Unfortunately, some refuse to acknowledge that commonality. They hate. And they ignore or shun what is not like them. They hire people who look like them and act like them. So there are no laws that bar a certain race from living in a particular area, but then again, it is unwritten/unspoken law.

The outcry about white only territories would be nonexistent, if whites didn't have a stronghold on resources. Wealth is inherited. Europeans traveled the world and raped, robbed and pillaged for wealth. They are now hoarding the wealth due to biased hiring practices and barring the very people they subjugated to help them acquire wealth from receiving any of it.

No one asks people to feel guilty. The past is past. But the past does not end. The present is rooted in past. So we can't ignore the past. We have to act to rectify past imbalances. And if we don't give a darn, that's okay, too. But the Man upstairs is watching. And He judges all. Many who are wealthy and living fat off the land will be paupers, after they stop breathing. Their spirits are already piss poor.

I live in a building, mostly Vietnamese.  They are generally ok, like anyone.  But all (ALL) of the residents are on public housing. They (ALL) receive SSI, money they didn't contribute a dime too, and some are still able to travel back "home". They admire White folks and generally hate Black people. They all drive new cars. Their opinion of police is . . . well, ask the elder Jews how they feel about Nazis.  They have new cars. Like Mexicans tend to do, until they're reprimanded they will leave their garbage outside their doors or OUTSIDE the garbage room. But enjoy your sterotypes and your hatreds.  Perhaps you're a foreigner too.  If I were you, it is possible I would have the same attitudes.

@Mitchell_Young Uh, you are very biased. You complain that the Civil Rights movement harmed traditional American rights. BUT blacks ARE Americans, yes? I don't think that's what the rest of the planet's people say. Besides, Blacks didn't "invite" here after their own countries' atrocities, faminines, genoices became unbearable -- or  themselves or commit any genocides or mass killings to arrive here in this wonderful country.

@OnePlanet Vietnamese hate whites, too, Darling. They PRETEND to admire whites, because they are "guests" who have immigrated to their country. People don't forget those who transgress against them. Jews hate whites, too - even though they have assimilated. They did this in Germany, also in order to avoid dangerous racism. They hid amongst the majority.

ccsondrisa

Like I said we all have issues. Some blakcs hate whites, some mexicans hate blacks, some whites hate themselfs!! Most of us are just living life. Until we stop playing the victum roles racism will never stop. I can tell you that if I or my family were to move to an all black neighborhood that we wouldnt get the warm welcome that you think we would nor if we took out a front cover of a magazine accusing black people of wanting us gone that it would go over well. White people are run out, loose there homes and jobs every day.  I think every race works hard and unfortunelty we all deal with the same issues in one way or another. Middle to upper class is middle to upper class it has no color. I am not saying that there are not some unfortunate sad stories but People can be assholes, some will always ruin things I feel its easy to throw a race card when wanting to proove a point yet inturn everyone wants the "same opportunity" Sometimes it seems easier to play the lifes harder for us card than to move on and join society like everyone else. I am pretty sure there are some black people that are really tired of this shit too and do not agree with this article. Again until we stop dwelling it will never stop and we will deal with the same issues for our Children and grandchildren.

@joshseagal @koreole Crime stats in the country don't exist in a vacuum. The establishment is not set up in a way that many blacks believe they can prosper. Thus they make money outside of the system. Whites created the laws after breaking every natural and spiritual law in erecting the system. Why should blacks follow those laws now? You stop lying.

koreole

dude that is sorry excuse. If we use that excuse for racism then when it comes to crimes against humanity, who'll you think would garner the most racism? My guest anglos. But unfortunately they don't recieve racism if they do its very little.

@ccsondrisa It's true that people generally fear "the other." We fear the unknown. But it is no accident that other ethnic groups come to the country and are able to rise in society MUCH easier than blacks. Those groups were not enslaved by the powers that be in this country. Thus those groups are not subject to special treatment (positive and negative) based on past history. Our president has NO ANCESTRY that was enslaved in this country.  African American blacks have run for president in the past and lost. There is a fear of retribution due to the rape, abuse, robbery, assault, and general evil perpetuated against blacks in the past. Many whites believe blacks hate them because of a past that still affects blacks in the present. Thus whites don't want to deal with this assumed hatred. So they are comfortable in worlds that do not include black faces like the tiny world of OC.

@joshseagal @koreole Look at the root of problems in ANY country today, and you will find a stone thrown by a white hand. There is a Greek myth that details how a stone was thrown into the territory  of sons of dragons (powerful warriors) to stir them up against each other. It's called divide and conquer. Whites invaded lands and  divided them up, so they could conquer and rape and rob the people of their wealth.
