Hooooooooooly crap.

Newport Beach's renowned surf spot, the Wedge, experienced 15-foot-plus waves on 7/24, which drew a large crowd of gawkers left wondering if this was Newport Beach or the Banzai Pipeline. Though it was truly a phenom and a sight to behold, the day wasn't without its tragedies either—50-year-old body surfer Monte Kevi Valantin of Lawndale died after being thrown against the rocks in 20-foot waves.
