Water temperature can be in the high 50s sometimes, but at least this past weekend yielded some sunshine.
As you may know, thanks to the downward turn of the economy and the continual seeming extinction of white collar jobs, the city of Huntington Beach saw record numbers turn out for their annual lifeguard tryouts the first weekend of March. On 3/7, Huntington Beach held tryout for State lifeguard positions. All applicants were put up to a grueling test of a competitive 1000 yard swim with a time limit of 20 minutes and a competitive bout of run-swim-run (200 yard run and 400 yard swim, all topped off with another 200 yard run). As of 2008, the starting pay for a Huntington Beach lifeguard is $15.92/hour (plus an additional 5% for EMT certification and 5% for passing bilingual examination).
