Charlie Vasquez holds his first-place, A-division trophy.

When security guard Richard Gomez was hired to patrol the Costa Mesa High School campus 10 years ago he decided he had to do more than watch as some of the kids fell into gang life. His most inventive idea: A handball tournament. It started small with a few students and a few trophies and has grown to include players from around the county and beyond. On Nov. 14, about 60 youths—from Orange, Santa Ana, Newport Beach, Costa Mesa and Canoga Park—showed up to compete for the top prizes.
