2011 US Open of Surfing: Day Five

1 of 73

Kevin Lara

Fan-favorites Rob Machado and Joel Parkinson share a smile with each other as both of them were eliminated in their first heat of the competiton.

The second day of the Men's draw of the U.S. Open of Surfing at the Huntington Beach pier saw upsets aplenty. Both Joel Parkinson (the No. 1 surfer on the ASP World Tour) and Rob Machado were eliminated in the same heat, and then the local boy, the two-time defending champ, Brett Simpson suffered a similar fate. The surfing was just that good, even though the waves were that bad. See more of our US Open of Surfing coverage here.
