What is National Margarita Day?!? I had never heard of it until the day before yesterday! I guess it's a day where we glorify, celebrate, and consume margaritas. Nothing wrong with that! Still don't really know what it means, but thanks to the fine folks at the legendary El Torito, I am now a huge fan! You won't even believe what they're doing to celebrate it tomorrow at all 57 of their restaurants! Read on!!!!!!!
Established in 1954 by Larry Cano, El Torito has a history of innovation in Mexican cuisine in the U.S. They're credited with introducing the "margarita cocktail," in addition to popularizing such items as tableside guacamole, the sizzling fajitas platter and the edible tostada shell. They had incredible freeeee Happy Hour Buffet Spreads back in the day that were as elaborate as any Sunday Brunch buffet. You'd buy one drink, and eat 10 meals worth of great food any day of the week! Plus, the free food items always changed. My most wonderful memory of Larry Cano wasn't Larry himself (who no longer owns the chain), but his gorgeous daughter, Lea, who I once made out with while a DJ on KROQ. At one point, El Torito had more than 100 locations. They now have 57, including 13 in the OC: Tustin, Irvine, Placentia, Anaheim, Laguna Hills, Buena Park, Dana Point, Fullerton, Orange, Cypress, and 3 locations in Long Beach. In all seriousness, this is a pretty impressive deal. $2 Margs all day and night. WOW!!!!! And it's not just their original margarita only as you might expect. No, the $2 Margaritas give you plenty of variety, a choice between Original, Strawberry, Rasberry, Melon with Midori, Pineapple/Coconut, and Mango. Awesome!
1 Very Important Footnote I had to visit an El Torito myself (unannounced as usual) to see what was really going on. I hadn't been to El Torito for years, so like a good investigative reporter, I popped into their Irvine restaurant across from John Wayne Airport. At 6 PM on a Thursday evening, the place was packed, both bar and dining room. There was great energy! The staff was incredibly friendly including Manager Alex and Personality Plus Bartender Donna. The crowd was having a lot of fun! Most importantly, how good was the food and drink? Well, here's your answer. The plate of Wings and the Melon with Midori Margarita in the main pic were my order. The Margarita was incredibly good and the wings were very tasty! Tomorrow, you'll get that Marg all day long for $2 and the Wings for 50 cents each. Bring on National Margarita Day!
