On the Line: Scott Raczek of Tavern + Bowl, Part Two

On Wednesday, June 25, Tavern + Bowl teams up with Yelp to benefit Make-A-Wish Orange County and the Inland Empire. This 21 and over event is being held from 7-9 p.m. and includes a DJ, raffle, discounted bowling, select comped beverages and passed appetizers. 100% of the donations and raffle proceeds will benefit the non-profit, so head over to your local Yelp event page for more details.

Part two starts below.

Hardest lesson you've learned:
Life is short

What's your favorite childhood memory?
Having orange grove fights with my friends and being chased by the farmer. Also, we used to do a lot of beach camping in Mexico, riding motorcycles and horses. Open-flamed campfires are the best!

Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Anaheim Hills where there were still orange and avocado groves.

I read that you've worked with a number of non-profits. Do you have any charity work on the calendar?
Tavern + Bowl makes countless donations to a wide variety of charities and non-profit organizations. We recently teamed up with Miracles for Kids for our grand opening celebration and were able to raise %1,500 on their behalf. The Roosters will be joining us for a gathering the day after our event with Make-A-Wish (see introduction for more information). We take great pride in our level of community involvement throughout San Diego, and now Orange County.

Tell us something most people don't know about you.
I have a great green thumb! I do vegetable and landscape-style gardening. I like that eco-friendly, Napa Style look.

What did you study in school? Did you always plan on being a chef?
Architecture was my principal focus when I ws in school, but the excitement of cooking and restaurant life really became my passion. [Editor's Note: Raczek stated he would like to do landscape architecture if he wasn't in the restaurant industry.]

Last book read; how was it?
I recently read three books by Bill O'Reilly, Killing Kennedy, Killing Lincoln and Killing Jesus.

Do you bowl? If so, are you any good?
I have been known to throw a strike or two in my day. We have very cool, modern lanes. People have a blast on them!

When you're not in the kitchen, what are you doing in your free time?
I like to run; it is my morning religion. I'm always looking for the next marathon to run.

Last thing you looked up online.
I like drinking different wines. It is fun to taste a wine you have never had before and enjoy the expression the winemaker put in that bottle. So when I am shopping, I look up a lot of new wine before I buy. Got to love these smart phone apps!
