On the Line: Dave Larsen of C4 Deli: Cure for the Common, Part Two

The zingers keep flying as my chat with Mr. Larsen continues.

You say you haven't read yesterday's segment yet?
Well, oh-em-gee, hurry up and click here.
Whew! That was a close one.

When you're not in the kitchen creating, what are you doing?
I'm a believer that sleep brings on a new level of creativity. People say, “I'll sleep when I'm dead.” I believe when you sleep, it helps you create new and beautiful things. Ideas need to be nurtured and shared. And, being a chef, sleep is vital for me in order to do that.

Favorite childhood memory?
A lot of my favorite childhood memories include my dad. Fishing on the Owens River with him, catching our limit and eating way too much trout. Playing poker with him and his trucker buddies— we had two rolls of quarters, and I won the whole pot!

What turns you on: creatively, spiritually or emotionally?
Passion. If you can be passionate about Britney Spears, and I can see a sparkle in your eye, that tells me you're not fucking with me and that you're actually super passionate about Britney. I'm so down. I'll probably even dance with you! #hitmebaby

Where did you grow up?
Right here, fool! I was born at Saint Joseph's in Orange, and graduated from Villa Park High School.

Tell us something most people don't know about you.
I own a 1970 Volkswagon Bus. It's one of the camper ones, but it doesn't have a lift top. But it does have the bench that turns into a bed in the back.

Hardest lesson you've learned:
You can try to help someone, but the only person you can help is yourself.

Last song playing on your radio:
Beck's Morningside.

Let's discuss your time in Germany.
I was in Germany for a little over a year; it's just one place that I've lived. Germany is kind of like a giant storybook. I was a putzfrau, so there  was a lot of basic work like changing sheets, dusting, vacuuming. I can still make a bed better than any of my friends.

Do you have any skills that don't have to do with cooking?
Yep. A lot. I grow a garden every year, and I enjoy a good harvest. I raise chickens, and I am somewhat of a carpenter. I live a blessed life. I have good friends, family, cousins and uncles. Every day I am thankful.

What would you like guests to know that we haven't already asked?
Catch C4 at OC Weekly's Fresh Toast on Saturday, February 27. We've got a pretty killer beer and wine selection, and bottles are available to-go. We'll also be participating in Orange County Restaurant Week March 6-12, 2016.
