OC Grub Guide For May 12-18: BBQ, OC Night Market, and More!

Prepare to do a lot of this.

When we compile intel for our weekly post, it's a combination of Facebook browsing and a boatload of emails (with the occasional Facebook Messenger for good measure). This time around, the party bus is making a bunch of stops in one particular city. And while Long Beach ain't OC, it is BBQ. And we welcome all things 'que.

OC Night Market - Costa Mesa
Going strong in its third year, do wear comfy footwear for the never ending line that is Night Market. Back at the fairgrounds, this is one eclectic roundup of primarily Asian eats, merch and entertainment. Friendly reminder of CASH ONLY ($8 parking; $5 admission), and be sure to wander all over. You never know what awesomeness you might discover, as Edwin did last year. We'll likely be hunting down Paloma's Paletas for dessert. And if you can't make it this weekend, there's always June and August.

Grgich Hills Estate Winemaker Dinner At Antonello - Costa Mesa
Your five courses begin with passed appetizers paired with a 2013 Fume Blanc at 6:30 p.m. Smoked salmon, braised pork shank and homemade apricot tart sound like one fulfilling dinner on Friday. We suggest calling ahead for reservations. Date night, anyone?

5th Annual West Coast BBQ Classic - Long Beach
Cross over county lines after you survive Friday the 13th for some delicious meats. This one-day only event is the perfect excuse to visit the Queen Mary next door, since it includes general admission to board. Check out this KCBS-sanctioned afternoon with fellow carnivores, or make it a family day. Then take one hell of a nap afterwards.

A very special sake tasting - Costa Mesa
While the Hi-Time wine bar does do monthly sake tastings, this one will be different. Tassho Pearce from World Sake Imports will be pouring next Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. Per our favorite wine expert, Veronica Castro, "We will be trying 10 different sakes, ranging in taste from dry as a martini to the best plum wine I've ever had in my life." Tastes include Koshi no Kanbai Ginjo "Tokusen" (Vanishing Point), Dewazakura Ginjo "Oka" (Cherry Bouquet) and Tedorigawa Nama Daiginjo "Kinka" (Gold Blossom). No reservations required for this $20 experience.
