Welcome to the Weekly's list of our 100 Favorite Dishes for 2011! Tune in every day until we get to número uno! Now, on to numéro soixante-quatre, the latest entry.
The best-kept secret at Disneyland has nothing to do with Walt lore, secret VIP tunnels, or Club 33. The best-kept secret at Disneyland is that their bakeries turn out the best macaroons in Orange County.
These are not macarons (one O)--not the French sandwich cookie. No, these are macaroons with two O's, the Passover treat that's essentially coconut mashed together until it coheres. Normally, they're about the size of a quarter and come in boxes in the kosher section of the supermarket; at Disneyland, they're as big as a woman's fist and come drizzled with chocolate. Chewy, slightly crunchy, sweet but not saccharine--I wish there were a way to order these by the dozen for parties.
For a while, they went missing, and I was heartbroken; they returned drizzled with white chocolate (blech!) as Matterhorn-type cookies, and now they're back to being their beautiful, dark chocolatey selves.
A limited supply is baked each day and they're reasonably priced for being in a theme park ($1.99 each), so they run out fast. If the Blue Ribbon Bakery at Main Street, U.S.A. has run out, use your park hopper ticket to run over to Baker's Field Bakery at Disney California Adventure. It's in the California Zephyr--you know, the long silver train near the entrance to the park.
