No. 52, Free Happy Hour Food at Gulliver's

Hey, kids: guess what time is it? It's time to restart that Long March known as 100 Favorite Dishes (INSERT YEAR). YEAH!!!

Hey, don't ding us for listicles: Weekly DataLab studies show ustedes love this gimmick, launched in honor of our coming Best Of issue. Besides, it is rather fun to do this for us Forkers–an opportunity to highlight dishes from restaurants we'll never fully review, or secrets from old standbys. Anyhoo, let the march begin…

If you want some of the best free Happy Hour food to go with your already discounted beer, you need to come early. Gulliver's, the restaurant that all John Wayne-exiting travelers should be familiar with, starts serving their veritable buffet of complimentary hors d'oeuvres at 4 p.m. weekdays and the supplies will dwindle down to nothing by the end of it all at 7 p.m.

Enjoy multiple rounds of actual burgers (cut into quarters), deviled eggs, crudites, smoked salmon dip, and a chafing dish of what tasted like Sloppy Joe meat made from chipped beef while sipping a pint in a room that will remind you of the old Cask n' Cleavers, the Whale n' Ales, and all its variants. The restaurant is decked out with copper, wood, B&W photos, and a hearth–the kind of old English pub that actually looks like it came from old England.

And it's all free. But a warning: all the appetizers will inevitably whet your appetite for the prime ribs dinners your fellow pub patrons are tucking into. These are slabs of pristine pinkness still attached to bone, complete with real grated horseradish, a pour of thick-as-syrup au jus, hot creamed spinach and a crackle-crusted, amorphously large Yorkshire pudding–an edible bowl for creamed corn the bar wenches dole out of a steaming ramekin with a gigantic spoon.
