No. 51: The Scone at Coffee, Tea and Tulips

No. 51: The Scone at Coffee, Tea and Tulips

Whether you're at Coffee, Tea and Tulips for a fancy-ass tea service, or just regular ol' breakfast or lunch, "Moody Chef" Michael Samawi's lengthy menu can be difficult to navigate. American, British, French and Middle Eastern fare all appear, so once you think you know what to order, something else will undoubtedly catch your eye.

I rotate between the pig-on-pig action of the Cochon sandwich, anything with roasted veggies or anything on a croissant, but one thing always stays the same. I never leave without savoring a scone.

Biscuit-fluffy within, with an exterior that is lightly crisp and studded with glassy sugar crystals, the scone has a slight saltiness that complements a selection of unique jams and jellies. A dish of clotted cream is beautiful and glossy, the body fuller than whipped cream, but not as solid as sour cream.

Fig jam adds a syrupy-sweet touch, while pale yellow lemon curd briefly curls the tongue before yielding a friendlier finish. Fig ketchup, a recent add, is a savory combination of jam and tomatoes, spiked with smoky cumin and potent anise.

Flavors vary; sometimes there are currants, though cranberry or blueberry are typically featured. For Valentine's Day, the bread receives a red velvet makeover with strawberry cream. Order "Marla's Surprise Birthday Crepe" and Samawi will throw one on top of a fresh crepe, covering all of it in chocolate and whipped cream. But no matter the flavor, or what's on the side (or on top), this scone never disappoints.
