No. 39: Fried Almond Shrimp Balls at Capital Seafood

We're now halfway through the Long March known as 100 Favorite Dishes (INSERT YEAR). YEAH!!!

Hey, don't ding us for listicles: Weekly DataLab studies show ustedes love this gimmick, launched in honor of our coming Best Of issue. Besides, it is rather fun to do this for us Forkers–an opportunity to highlight dishes from restaurants we'll never fully review, or secrets from old standbys. Anyhoo, let the march begin…

There's a time of day that we despise. It's that time when you know it's too late for dim sum, but you're craving it anyway. How are we supposed to remedy that? At Capital Seafood, the cure is Asian tapas (not to be confused with an eatery by the same name). You can cheat and order an actual dim sum platter, post lunch hour. Or you show a little restraint and get the shrimp balls, like we prefer.

Coated with slivers of toasted almonds, our juicy seafood spheres tide us over before the family-style meal kicks into high gear. And forget the soy–dip them into sickly sweet chili sauce to counter that deep fried goodness. These bites possess rich, nutty notes we love. They also pair well with beer, but we digress.

We've only spotted them at their Irvine locales, so go ahead and wield your chopsticks. Some of us aren't quite as adept. On occasion we may spear one, consuming it like a cake pop. With six per order, you can easily share with one or two friends. We may need to fight rock-paper-scissors-lizard-Spock you if there's a fourth person, though.
