No. 22: Fried Bologna Slider At The Burnt Truck

With everyone else going back to school, we're reminded of that cliquish time of day known as lunch hour. Deli combos, vending machines and the occasional candy gram were standard diet. By college, we were SO over cold cuts and mayo. Anything that resembled a sandwich was avoided. We had all but banished the term in our vocabulary.

Yet it took one slider to bring us back to our senses. Occasionally served as a special, this treat from The Burnt Truck embodies a cafeteria of 2% milk and seasoned criss-cut fries.

Held together by a toasted King's Hawaiian roll, the cushioned, sweet exterior balances its filling. Thinly sliced, battered and fried onion rings allow for enough crunch. Our deli meat has a nice sear, but is never burnt. Tangy yellow mustard and garlic aioli give it some tang. It's a mini-sandwich without attitude, like the classmate who gets along with everyone. They would get an 'A' in our book if it was served more often.
