Before there was 85 Degrees, faithful Irvinites made the neighborhood stop to J.J., where most buns are still priced under a buck fifty, and the lines never went out the door. Sure, there were meat options (even before they expanded to include a mini-cafe). Curry beef puff pastry, hot dog bun, and the sticky rice wrapped up in twine like a tropical UPS package are all savory sweet in their own right. Yet, this fan repeatedly reaches for the item often next to the register. Behold the pork chop bun.

Take their signature bun, with its distinguishing sheen, and split it down the middle like a loaf of Home Pride. The pounded, breaded and deeply fried cutlet is schnitzel's immigrant cousin, nestled into place. A pickled vegetable garnish takes the edge off all the doughy sweetness and meaty chew. It easily passes for a handy meal on-the-go, since crumbing is a non-issue with these particular ingredients. And dammit, it's cheap, too! Just the way we like it.

J.J. Bakery is located at 15333 Culver Dr., Irvine, (949) 653-1678. Operating hours are from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., every day.
