Learn to Cook on Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution Truck!

Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution Truck is parked in Santa Ana until April, offering free classes on healthy cooking for the community. Today, from 3 to 7 p.m., the massive mobile kitchen is holding an open house to which the public is invited.

Santa Ana-based organization Latino Health Access and the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation are co-hosting the classes, which are geared toward stopping the childhood-obesity epidemic by empowering families to prepare healthy, home-cooked meals that can be made as quickly as going to buy fatty, processed fast food.

The classes focus on building skills and confidence in young cooks, particularly students in Santa Ana, so they develop a pattern of healthier eating. People from beyond the city will be welcome to join as room allows.

The five-week program in Santa Ana will allow 20 students per each 1.5 hour class to work inside the big-rig kitchen. There is a teacher for every 4 students, allowing for very small, hands-on work groups. There will be 20 sessions per week at different times throughout the day, for a total enrollment of 400 students.

Most of these slots for round one are already filled, but round two classes begin the first week of March, and some slots are still available. Those interested should come down for today's open house, as plans for a second open house are still not certain. After that, the Food Revolution moves on to other California cities, so stop by today's open house to see if you'd want to join the revolution.

And we asked, because you'd want to know: Chef Oliver is not scheduled to appear at today's open house, or during the truck's stay in Orange county.

Latino Health Access is on 450 W. 4th Street in Santa Ana. The public is advised to park in the public parking structure on 3rd and Birch Streets. The big rig is located on the LHA parking lot on the corner of 3rd and Ross Streets.
