A Roach Coach Is No Different Hygienically From a Luxe Lonchera. REPEAT: A Roach Coach Is No Different Hygienically From a Luxe Lonchera
The ultimate "roach coach" in OC--beats Spudrunners by a billion
Man, what is it about non-Mexican restaurant owners who delve into the world of Mexicans and immediately start trashing their brown-skinned contemporaries as dirty? And how about the reporters that enable such stupidity? It happened with one of the owners of Chapter One: the modern local trashing the quinceañera shops on Fourth Street, and it's happened again with the Spudrunners luxe lonchera.
In an interview with The Orange County Register talking about how luxe loncheras are starting to moor themselves at local universities, Spudrunners owner Bob Brown throws an unnecessary, stupid jab at Mexican-run loncheras. The Reg's Hannah Fry held up the straw man for Brown by writing that Cal State Fullerton (which hosts Spudrunners) had hesitations about allowing food trucks on campus "given the reputation old-school trucks have."
And what reputation would that be, Hannah? For cheap, delicious food? Because only pendejos think unsafe food comes from loncheras--and one of those pendejos is Brown.
"We're trying to separate ourselves from the roach-coach category," Brown told Fry.
Here's the funny part: According to Orange County health-code regulations, Brown CAN'T separate his truck from loncheras. As I noted in my 2009 feature on the history of OC loncheras, all food trucks in the county must park every night at a commissary and undergo regular inspections. This goes for loncheras and luxe loncheras alike.
"Roach-coach category"? Really? So 1980s. Do I have to say again that the three times I've ever suffered food poisoning, it was from trendy restaurants? Add Spudrunners to our ever-expanding category of local restaurants you shouldn't patronize for its owners' pendejadas.
