OC Weekly Archives

Every day is a holiday for some sort of food these days, and while some remain skeptical of such excessive celebration, you have to admit: it can be fun. Burgers? Fries? Baked Beans? Time to party (or just read articles like this one...) If you didn't know, today is National Hot Dog Day, and--before you roll your eyes at me--get this: some places are offering some cool specials today. We included them below.

10. Hula Dog (Newport Beach)

Hula Dog items are as interesting in taste as they are architecturally: buns are impaled on a ramrod straight steel pike and heated from the inside which leaves a hole for the dog. Buns here come in flavors like FBI Honey Wheat and Taro Bacon, and the dogs are dressed with with a secret sauce and relishes made with mango, papaya, and other Hawaiian flavors.

9. Wursthaus (Santa Ana)

Wursthaus has great beers from the faraway lands of Belgium and Germany, fries that Charles stands by, and a selection of sausages hard to find anywhere else in Santa Ana. If you're bored with chicken or pork, go for a rabbit or lamb sausage that'll be warmly squeezed into a warm roll. And vegan options are also available for your Earth-friendly companions: there's meatless Mexican Chipotle, Smoked Apple & Sage, and Italian dogs.

Pie Dog is offering a chili dog combo with tots and a soda for $8 to celebrate National Hot Dog Day--the equivalent price of one of their hot dogs on a normal day. If you don't want a chili dog, try one of their other house-made dogs. Their namesake dog, the Pie Dog, consists of their house sausage, a potato bun, and sauteed onions and peppers. Other sausages they have are traditional bratwurst, spicy chicken, philippine sausage, and some others.

Skinless dogs are Dog Haus' speciality, in which their Haus Dog Sooo Cali (arugula, tomato, crispy onions, spicy basil aioli, avocado) leads in popularity. To celebrate this national holiday, they're offering to upgrade your Haus Dog to a Snap Dog (a larger size) for free today.

And if you're not done celebrating hot dogs today, check out Dog Haus' grand opening in Fullerton this Saturday at 11 a.m. There'll be free gourmet hot dogs all day!

6. Portillo's (Buena Park)

We should be honored that an institution like Portillo's is within driving distance to teach all about Chicago's hot dogs. If you've never had one before, go straight for their classic hot dog, which is topped with mustard, relish, onions, sliced tomatoes, a pickle, sport peppers, and is held together with a steamed poppy seed bun. You might never go back.

Artisan hot dogs are everywhere these days, but what happens when you just want a simple one? You drive to PCH Hot Dogs in Orange, a classic hot dog stand that's consistently fed locals sauerkraut dogs, chili cheese dogs, and corn dogs. If you want something a bit more complex, though, they've got the Tijuana dog, a hot dog that's topped with relish, tomatoes, jalapenos, and bacon.

4. Disney Corn Dog at Little Red Wagon (Anaheim)

People always have mixed feelings about Disneyland, whether it's about how truly happy it makes them or how annoyed they are at the park's rising ticket prices. But even then, there's still a constant: their corn dogs are freaking amazing. People wait in lines for all sorts of things at Disneyland, but the line in front of Little Red Wagon is one of the most reasonable. The corn dog here is particularly notable for the crispiness of its fried cornbread, the remains of which always seep into the sausage graciously.

Mini-dogs and sliders made with King's Hawaiian Rolls are the pride and joy of Burntzilla, lovechild of The Burnt Truck and Dogzilla. The hot dogs here are made for the fusion lover as well as the curious fusion-virgin: the classic Dogzilla, for instance, is okonomiyaki on a hot dog bun, and the Yaki is a hot dog topped with yakisoba. Oh, and if you're a rewards members with Burntzilla, you're in luck: on National Hot Dog Day, you'll get a free Zilla with any purchase. Not a member? Become one. All you have to do is give the cashier your phone number.

2. LinX (Orange)

LinX inhibits a tiny space in Old Town Orange that works marvelously with its "backyard patio" theme. But regardless of the eatery's casual atmosphere, cooks don't bring you hot dogs made of Oscar Mayer wieners and buns that came from Trader Joe's $2.50 bun pack. Sausages here are from local wholesalers Europa Speciality Sausage and the buns are from no other place than O.C. Baking Company. Each hot dog is abundant with toppings so, before you come here, make sure you're okay with getting your fingers greasy.

1. The Viking Truck

Vikings were the original folks who knew what it meant to be a boss. The gourmet hot dogs at The Viking Truck are the same way in spirit, pillaging expectations and replacing them with deep-seated awe. Wanting to bring European flavors to Orange County, owners of The Viking Truck offer pork and veal sausages (but there's chicken, beef, and vegetarian sausages too if you're not into those). Their bestseller is the one and only Odin, a smoked bratwurst with sweet pickled red cabbage, sauerkraut, cheese, bacon, mustard and ketchup.
