Dunno what they put in the boba in Garden Grove and Westminster, but something's gotta explain why its geriatric gabacho elected officials say the darndest things about Vietnamese. In September, GG councilmember Harry Krebs had to apologize after telling councilwoman Janet Nguyen he couldn't explain his position in Vietnamese. Now we have Westminster Mayor Margie Rice telling the Los Angeles Times that she doesn't support changing the name of tiny Moran Street to that of legendary newspaper publ
Getting calls from my various Chicano yaktivist pals, and they're saying the kids are marching out of Westminster, Garden Grove, and Anacrime. Reports of police beating up kids on Bristol and Warner in SanTana, although the kids supposedly through rocks. Pendejos. Off to take pictures. . .
Frequent Clockwork and Blotter commenter El Serracho just received a little present from a Westminster school district parent: hate mail. Someone named Stephanie Erickson apparently googled herself and found her name referenced on a blog post about the Westminster school board rescinding Dr. Kim Oanh Nguyen-Lam's position as superintendent. That prompted a six-paragraph, typo-infested email to ES, who especially like this passage:

This paper has rightfully dinged the Orange County Register's readers over the years, specifically their insane Letters to the Editors that have advocated everything from darkie-dumping to homo-hating to machismo and, always, always Mexican-bashing. But a letter this past Sunday by Lou Shaver of Irvine tops anything this longtime Register reader/critic has ever read in the paper for absolute stupidity.
What set Shaver off was news that the indefatigable Sandra Robbie is seeking to make Californ
Say you've been invited to potluck but you can't cook. Or your family's hungry, and you don't have much time or money to burn. There are a myriad of options, of course, most of them involving take-out. But for my hard-earned cash, there's Little Saigon's food-to-go shops -- establishments that exist just for these very reasons.
In particular, there's Huong Huong, a stop-in-and-get-out food-to-go shop with its own parking lot (albeit a tiny one) on Westminster's main drag of Bolsa.
A faithful reader recently wrote in a question for my ¡Ask a Mexican! column wondering why the city of Westminster doesn't acknowledge Mendez vs. Westminster, the landmark desegregation case that allowed Mexican kids to attend school with their white peers and served as a precursor to the much-more-famous Brown vs. Board of Education. I thought the letter-writer was mistaken...but nope! The SanTana Unified School District (one of the four school districts named as Mexican-segregators in the Mend
It's the third OC location for the self-serve, Irvine Company-owned venture (the others are in Fountain Valley and Westminster). It's on the site of the Tropical Smoothie Café that shuttered last year. So, what sets Yogurt Passion apart from its competitors? Not a lot, as far as we can tell, although it does offer fresh lychee as a topping, which you can't get everywhere. And for those froyo fans who missed it, here's a link to Edwin's impressive list of all the SoCal froyo chains (nearly 50!). Oh boy. Look at these dudes."Post-hardcore." Post, hard, core. Three words that, at one point, wouldn't have made a lick of sense when placed together. But now, it's almost impossible to imagine them without each other. What a world.
The phone has been ringing off the hook at the Westminster home of Vang Pao, the former CIA-backed Laotian Secret Army general Nick Schou wrote about.
That's because the federal government late last week dropped charges claiming the 79-year-old in poor health tried to overthrow the Lao People's Democratic Republic.
It's the Weekly's weekly roundup of local police calls and assorted mayhem.MONDAY, NOV. 2". . . and I don't like you!" "I'm Talking Tina . . . and Things Are Going to Be Different Around Here" A woman called 9-1-1 around 3:45 in the morning to say she heard a baby toy go off downstairs in her home in the 26800 block of Moore Oaks Road in Laguna Hills even though no one else was supposed to be down there. She wanted deputies to come by and make sure everything was safe. Set your tasers to stun
