International Pop Overthrow Festival at Fitzgerald’s on July 26
Better Than: Bingo night at the old folks home
It’s hard to imagine that in a constant media barrage of the Avril Levines, Jonas Bothers, and Simple Plan’s of the world, the pop rock genre has anything to offer besides an endless supply of fresh faced, power chord pumping puppets long on looks and short on talent. That is, until you take pop out of the bright lights of the arena and into the dark, cramped quarters of the loc
Fingerprints in Long Beach have a most assuredly unique event coming up on Tuesday, Nov. 25—a jam session with Weezer lead singer Rivers Cuomo. Similar to the hootenany shows Weezer used to promote their latest album, those that get on the guest list are welcome to bring an instrument and help pick which songs will be performed. The guest list, which you can get on through pre-ordering Alone II: The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo (with that great cover seen here) at Fingerprints, is open as o
Andrew YoussefThe full lineup for KROQ's annual Weenie Roast show was released today, a whopping TWELVE DAYS! before the show itself. Seems kinda quick, right? Oh well. It still looks like a pretty good show, headlined by Weezer and Jimmy Eat World (pictured)--they toured together in 2001!--Kings of Leon, Silversun PIckups, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Rancid, Airborne Toxic Event and the much-polarizing Asher Roth.Tickets for the show, which takes place on May 16 at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irv
The 2009 version of KROQ's annual summer blowout, the Weenie Roast y Fiesta, is hitting the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater May 16. That's like less than two weeks away, so get on it. Bands include Weezer (who still don't have or bassist Matt Sharp back in the band, even though everyone knows they should), Kings of Leon, Jimmy Eat World, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Rancid, Silversun Pickups, the Airborne Toxic Event, Cage the Elephant and White Lies on the main stage and Hollywood Undead, Asher Roth, Anberli
It's, apparently, radio station concert season--tomorrow at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine is KIIS-FM's Wango Tango show, featuring pop luminaries as illustrious as Kelly Clarkson herself (pictured); next Saturday at the same venue is the Weezer-fronted KROQ Weenie Roast. The Black Eyed Peas, whose lovably inane single "Boom Boom Pow" (the latest in a number of lovably inane singles by them) has been on top of the Billboard chats for like 87 weeks in a row, are headlining. Blink 182 reuniting the night prior at a private party, the fact that
TRV$DJ-AM were closing the evening led to rampant speculation that
Blink-182 would be the final act. But the
Blink-182 reunion didn't happen.A last minute shuffling had KROQ move
Despite some conflicting reports on the matter, Weezer is coming to the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine with Blink-182 (pictured) on Sept. 17, as confirmed today by Live Nation. This is, of course, the first Blink-182 tour since their 2005 breakup, which led to largely uninspiring projects like 44 and Angels & Airwaves (apologies to any of you who may have indeed been inspired by those bands. You could do better). Will time be kind to Blink's songs about being in high school and goo
Weezer just announced a merch deal with Snuggie. Yes, Snuggie, that thing on tv that you (and I) laugh at until you actually try one and realize it's the best invention ever.
The contraption is called a Wuggie, and is basically a regular Snuggie with a Weezer logo. I'd be shittin' all over this if I didn't own a Snuggie. Seriously folks, I don't get paid to tell you this so you know I'm speaking the truth when I say that Snuggies freakin' rule.
One thing Snuggies don't mention in
Sometimes things happen by "popular demand." That's kid stuff. A mere trifle. A pittance. This second Blink-182 show just added to the schedule at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater? Why, that was a result of OVERWHELMING DEMAND! At least according to the Live Nation press release. It's happening Friday, Sept. 18 at the former Irvine Meadows, a day after the sold out previously announced show. Weezer won't be there this time around, but there's another pretty big band in their stead--Fall Out Boy, mar
Former Sleater-Kinney singer/guitarist Carrie Brownstein has a blog on NPR called Monitor Mix (stick with me), and yesterday she called out Weezer for being "the ultimate novelty band." Specifically, she targeted two of their new songs, "I'm Your Daddy" and "The Girl Got Hot," which the band debuted last week in South Korea. Here's the awful(ly catchy) "I'm Your Daddy":The problem is this: people are just catching on now that Weezer are a novelty band?
Andrew Youssef We, for one, are not happy with this heat wave of sorts. It needs to go away and it needs to tap its friend autumn on the shoulder to come the hell back. But anyway: So what'd you do this weekend? Was it as action-packed and fascinating as ours? First off, we caught Weezer, Blink-182 and Taking Back Sunday live at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater on Thursday and Friday. While we're the first to admit that Weezer's uh, not so Weezer-like anymore, we still love them to bits. Seriou
Andrew YoussefNo, you da man.Last Night: Blink-182, Weezer, Taking Back Sunday, Asher Roth at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, Irvine; September 17, 2009.Better Than: Growing up.Hostile Territory: Blink-182 is doing a huge promotion with the T-Mobile Sidekick, and advertisements were plastered all over the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. Blink-182 and Weezer both released their first albums in 1994. They're both two of the most successful "alternative rock" bands of the last couple decades.
On the heels of yesterday's radtacular announcement that !!! (Chk Chk Chk) are coming to Detroit Bar on September 28, the westside Costa Mesa venue hits us over the head with another awesome show. This time it's the Whigs on November 18. Yeah, that's the same Whigs that's been touring with Kings of Leon, including this past Saturday at the Forum. So that's pretty cool. It's also the first OC date for the Whigs since they opened up for the Kooks at the House of Blues in Anaheim last October. Th
Weezer, those guys who brought you the absolutely flawless Pinkerton in 1996 and a bunch of other less inspiring records after that, have released a new video for their song "(If You're Wondering if I Want You To) I Want You To." The song made its Orange County premiere last month when Weezer opened up for Blink-182 at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine; our review of that show is right here. The video stars Weezer (duh) and Cloverfield actress Odette Yustman and is off the band
If you've ever wanted to meet Rivers Cuomo and pick up some Golden Spoon all at the same time, you're in luck: Weezer will be at both Tilly's in the Irvine Spectrum and Best Buy Chino Hills in early November to sign copies of their newest album, Raditude, to be released November 3. (They'll also be at uh, Hot Topic in Los Angeles.) Full flier with details and the new teaser to their video for the first single off Raditude, "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To," after th
You might remember Weezer's endorsement of the Snuggie during their live concerts. This was the obvious next step to take. Christmas shopping: DONE--everybody gets a backwardsass robe!
