Our superlative editorial assistant, Vickie Chang, published a thought-provoking article (Yellow Fever) on the fascination of some with Asian-American females. Unfortunately, it also functioned to provoke the thoughtless, whom she discusses in Your Fetish, My Life in the current issue.
The internet message boards erupted with harsh criticism of the piece.
On MensActivism.com (a "Men's Rights and Activism" website), "John" went further, comparing "Yellow Fever" to Mein Kampf (bringing the number

Music Editor Dave Segal is somehow able to mentally catalogue every CD that he comes across. I know this because on a regular basis I wheel my chair across massive distance of four feet to his desk, throw several adjectives at him and delight at whatever he suggests I listen to.
Heart-wrenching blues? Bettye Lavette.
Groovy, downtempo lounge? Wax Tailor. Never fails.

Cobra Starship landed at the Pomona Glass House Friday night for the closest-to-OC leg of their "Really Really Ridiculously Good Looking Tour." Christopher Victorio caught the main act and support band Metro Station (but missed out on We The Kings and The Cab, also on tour with Cobra). The venue was packed, and some fans brought their Cobra Starship action figures along for the ride. Photos here.

Ordinarily, I keep pretty quiet about personnel matters at the Weekly. But the economic times we're living in are anything but ordinary. They're extraordinarily shitty, in fact. Which means that, all across the country, in all sorts of businesses (but especially the news business) extraordinarily shitty things are happening to good people.
American Apparel, the largest clothing manufacturer in the United States and the proud space-taker of the middle of the OC Weekly's back covers, has signed a 10-year lease on 70,000 square feet of space within the industrial property in Garden Grove shown here, Voit Commercial Brokerage announced today. The price was undisclosed.Hey, Vickie Chang, Weekly Trendzilla fashion columnist, tell me about American Apparel."I think the clothing itself is pretty decent but Dov Charney and his business pra
In "A Skitch in Time" Vickie Chang acknowledges that Dogtown stuff is all well and good, but Skitch Hitchcock and friends know that OC's own Salt Creek Beach crew has left its own mark on the skateboarding world. And Gustavo Arellano takes a look at Cirilo Flores, who rarely pursued discipline of molesting priests while serving on an important church board in "Meet the New Bishop."

Long Beach was representing in a big way last night at Detroit Bar: Not only was it the final installment of the Free Moral Agents residency, FMA's opener was LB's Deep Sea Diver, fronted by Beck guitarist Jessica Dobson. Our very own Vickie Chang took some photos over there last night, why not take a look, yes? If you're hungry for more Deep Sea Diver action, check out this interview Chris Ziegler did for us with Dobson back in December.
Not only did OC Weekly clubs editor Vickie Chang write this swell piece on LA's Everest for the Weekly, she also was at the show Thursday night, and came back with these pictures. Full service! Two Guns and Billy Kernkamp opened.

The recently reopened Fox Theater in Pomona (see Vickie Chang's article on the place) continues to impress. Not just from being an ultra-cool venue in terms of aesthetics, but also for bringing some great acts to our area-ish that you'd otherwise have to go to LA for (not that a trip to Pomona is usually much closer, depending on where you live, but still, less traffic!).Following last month's Wilco show, the Fox is hosting another legendary, iconic, add your own superlative here band--Sonic You
Vickie ChangDeep Sea Diver: no longer busking Friday. We got word from Buskerfest organizer Justin Hectus today that two previously scheduled bands, Free Moral Agents and Deep Sea Diver, both had to cancel--FMA due to a family illness, and Deep Sea Diver because of another commitment. Beth StirnamanIt's Monday morning and another Street Scene is officially in the books. And while it's important to note that this parking lot extravaganza of fog-filled stages, oddly eclectic line-ups, mind-altering drugs and festival food has reached it's 25th year, it's also worth mentioning that I'm no longer a stranger to this two-day Coachella by the sea. Although for anyone that was there, the temps this weekend were actually fit for a desert, or maybe Satan's ass crack. But harsh heat

Except, that is, to say that our Web Editor Vickie Chang, who is an Anteater alumni, kinda wishes that she had this when she was a wee student there.
