Our R. Scott Moxley reports that, by the end of the night at the Hyatt Regency Irvine, the older Republicans in the room showed on their faces exactly what they felt: worry, frustration, indignation. But the Young Republican types in their 20s and 30s were not missing a beat--or a drop of hooch--as they had a ball like it was any other chance to party.
By the way, Moxley--who has been covering these GOP monster truck pulls since 1994--would like to readjust his crowd figures. In an earlier post
... and I'm soooooo confused. I was out of town last Thursday through Sunday, and when I returned there were 17 messages on my phone from the likes of Pete Wilson, Dick Ackerman, Hillary Clinton, someone yammering about Jessica's Law, the Nguyen running for an OC school board seat and his partner in crime David Boyd, Wendy Leece (Costa Mesa City Council), Ben Stein, Alan Mansoor (Costa Mesa CC), sheriff's lieutenant Ron Cunningham (from which sheriff's agency, Lordy knows), "Don't Call Me" Shirl
As of half-past seven Monday night, Lou Correa has over 50% of the vote, beating opponent Lynn Daucher by 1,302 votes and winning California's 34th Senate seat. He collected more votes than opponents Daucher and Otto Bade combined, ending speculation that Bade's last-minute write-in campaign is what cost Daucher the election. Can we please stop calling him Otto the Spoiler now?
This is an unpleasant turn of events for Daucher, who on Election Night was claiming victory. At the Republican's ill-
The campaign of an OC Republican candidate named Nguyen has been caught distributing a clumsy bit of fraud. No, this is not another Tan Nguyen and the "Immigrants Can't Vote Letter" post.
From this morning's Times:
The campaign of an Orange County supervisorial candidate, whose slogan is "Honesty, Integrity and Leadership," has been caught doctoring a photo so that it places the politician close to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The photo into which Trung Nguyen was inserted appeared over the we
It's true!
According to Dan Chmielewski over at theliberaloc.com blog, Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (D-Anaheim), is scheduled to appear as a guest on "Real Time With Bill Maher" Friday at 11 p.m. on HBO.
Chmielewski wonders how many "pet the cat" jokes humorist Maher will utter. Perhaps not many. Maher's other talkative guests will include Bradley Whitford ("The West Wing"), John "the Mike Schroeder of journalism" Fund of the Wall Street Journal, presidential candidate Senator Chris Dodd (D-
For the past month, OC Weekly staffer Nick Schou (with an assist from web editor Janine Kahn) has followed protests at Viet Weekly's Garden Grove offices by Vietnamese who accuse the paper of communist sympathies. Coverage of the protests by the Los Angeles Times and Orange County Register has been non-existent or sympathetic toward the protestors--until this weekend. That's when Times reporter Mike Anton parachuted into Little Saigon and filed a dispatch reporting the same points Schou did rega
Doctor No: The public hospital crisis has placed nearly two dozen private hospitals in Los Angeles and Orange counties “in dire financial straits and in danger of bankruptcy or closure,” according to a depressing report in today’s Times. Reporters Daniel Costello and Susannah Rosenblatt found that the local healthcare system is so overburdened that “even a few other hospitals close or reduce costly critical-care services, it could mean longer ambulance rides to hospitals, additional del
We like Arizona Senator and Republican presidential candidate John McCain much more than his automaton flip-flopper (and Hugh Hewitt favorite) main opponent, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. But we've never been able to understand why Little Saigon's power brokers never asked McCain to apologize back in 2000, when he appeared before thousands in Westminster's Asian Garden Mall a couple of weeks after referring to Vietnamese as "gooks." McCain offered spin prior to appearing, explainin
On a cool evening in the heart of Little Saigon loud firecrackers periodically exploded as Vietnamese Americans celebrated the coming of Tet (Vietnamese New Year) and something that should comfort Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle: the launching of the Year of the Rat.
Of course, I'm kidding. According to Wikipedia, “rats can be terribly obstinate and controlling." Pringle is just the opposite: controlling and obstinate.
I’d thought of Pringle because as I worked my way through a traffic jam in
Photographer Jack Gould hung out at Pangea with the Dems last night, then visited Obama headquarters and this parking lot in Westminster near Assemblyman Van Tran's event (which he couldn't find).
Check his photos out over here.
Yesterday, I stumbled (literally: a Bloody Mary, bottle of soju from Ami Sushi, and a double Makers Mark were in my bloodstream) upon the Orange County Young Democrat mixer at Jason's Downtown in SanTana. The keynote speaker was Hoa Van Tran, the one Democrat running in the First Supervisorial District race on June 3rd against GOP gals Dina and Janet Nguyen (no relation). Tran gave a brief speech and took questions, including my own undoubtedly slurred query: given that Orange County's most prom
'They tried to portray Ashley as some weird loner who somehow deserved to get shot. The two policemen who fired 18 bullets at this teenager need to be brought to justice'
Sanchez Slayer?North Orange County state Assemblyman Van Tran announced thru the Register's Martin Wisckol today that he hopes to be the 2010 Republican challenger to OC's lone Democratic member of congress: Loretta Sanchez. The news is as surprising as a six-hour traffic jam on the 55 or four-year-old, three-foot pot holes in Santa Ana.Over the last 13 years, local Republican Party heavyweights, disturbed they lost a unanimous Republican congressional delegation in Washington, have made no sec
Don't believe the Red County gang: state assemblymember and Little Saigon don Van Tran had next to no chance to unseat incumbent Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez in next year's 47th District congressional race. All Tran had on his side were mostly Vietnamese voters and all Mexican-haters, while Loretta has all the Dems, wabs, and some Vietnamese voters on her side despite doing next to nothing in her 12 years in Capitol Hill. No amount of weekly press releases by the National Republican Congression
Van Tran, Tom Harman and Allan Mansoor--together at last.If state Sen. Tom Harman (R-Huntington Beach), Assemblyman Van Tran (R-Costa Mesa) and Costa Mesa Mayor Allan Mansoor get hit by a reckless driver as they pull into South Coast Plaza later this morning, do not expect them or their insurance companies to sue the driver. And if the accident is the fault of some confusingly screwy signs in the parking lot, don't expect the politicos to sue the tony shopping mall. And if they find a severed h
