The Cold War Kids are playing a very special Orange County show on Sept. 24, and anyone can go. Anyone, that is, who's willing to walk five kilometers for tickets.
The 24th is also the day of the Orange County Race for the Cure - namely the cure for breast cancer. The Race, held at Fashion Island in Newport Beach, is part of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation's vicious paramilitary action against malignant mammaries.
The Kids are encouraging friends and fans to join them on the day,
One of the world's greatest songwriters passed away Aug. 4 after losing a battle with renal cancer. Lee Hazlewood was 78.
Possessing a deadpan baritone voice and a laconic wit, Hazlewood is best known for his kitsch-pop and country-esque collaborations with Nancy Sinatra, including "These Boots Are Made For Walking," "Sundown, Sundown," "Jackson," "Sand," and the gothadelic "Some Velvet Morning," one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs ever. Although it was covered often, the original was
This weekend Gustavo Arellano sharpened his writing pen and wrote a post calling-out historian Chris Jepsen for not referencing his pieces on a historical blog.
Alex Brant-Zawadzki reported (again) on the continuing construction cost climb on estimates for the 241 Toll Road through Tressles.
Been on a meat eating binge? Edwin Goei's Monster Munching has the perfect solution for a detox, Souplantation's cookies. Apparently they're "buttery and not overly sweet." Mmm.

Better Than: Trying to find parking at the Hollywood Bowl.
Download: "The End Of The World" from The Cure Homepage.
After selling out the Hollywood Bowl, The Cure added another stop to their itinerary as they played the Shrine Auditorium. I would venture to say a good majority of the audience was in attendance at the Hollywood Bowl the previous night as well.
Sixty five days of Static stated the obvious when they announced to the
It's radio station concert day! Apparently!
KROQ has announced their lineup for day two (Dec. 14) of Almost Acoustic Christmas at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, and it is predictably pretty great: The Cure, The Killers, Death Cab for Cutie, Paramore, Franz Ferdinand (!), Scott Weiland, Snow Patrol and Vampire Weekend.
In the spirit of "one of these things is not like the other things," I choose you, Scott Weiland! Stone Temple Pilots are already playing day one; I guess if you mana
At this point, who hasn't covered the Phil Spector co-written classic "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)"? Mariah Carey sang it on her 1994 Merry Christmas album, U2 on the 1987 Christmas compilation A Very Special Christmas. Original singer Darlene Love performs the tune every year on "The Late Show with David Letterman;" even Smash Mouth has their own, no doubt terrible, version. But my favorite version is from 2004's Maybe This Christmas Tree--check out the awesome cover by Shag up in the corn
In a show so secret that information is readily available about it on several places online, The All-American Rejects--who released their third studio album, When the World Comes Down, today--are playing a free gig at Chain Reaction in Anaheim tomorrow.
I wanted to be the first person in the blogosphere to comment on what bands you should see at Coachella. So here goes.
The Aggrolites -- LA's best white boy reggae/soul/funk band. They wear cool clothes and know how to throw a dance party.
Thievery Corporation -- Maybe you know them, maybe you don't. The only time I went to Coachella (hello 2003), I saw these guys and they were great. Killer dance/groove stuff. Or maybe that was the weed talking.
Superchunk -- They're still around?

Drops? You like that? I'm hip with the kids.Anyway, 5'1'' female British emcee released her new single, "So Human," today. The track is available for download here.Or you hear it for free here. The tune samples the Cure's "Close to Me," and while I'm on the fence about hip-hop butchering some of my favorite songs, I'm way into the S-O-V and the Cure, so it's a match made in heaven.I got a copy of Lady Sovereign's debut, Public Warning, and let it sit on my desk for about six months because the hy
It's late, and I should probably sleep (or something resembling it) at this point (big day tomorrow: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, My Bloody Valentine, Public Enemy, Friendly Fires, the Cure, PB&J, Lykke Li, Okkervil River etc. etc.!) but I thought I'd share the setlist (and some totally astute observations) from Saturday headliners, the Killers. The Killers have gotten a ton of crap for not being headliner-worthy, and though the crowd for them was definitely thinner than it was for, say, Paul McCartney l
Get ready for the longest, hottest day yet! Forecast is for 100 degrees! The Cure will probably play for like three hours! What a time to be alive. If you can manage to stay alive, at least. Never a guarantee. Huge, huge day for shows: Cure, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, My Bloody Valentine, Public Enemy, Paul Weller, Peter Bjorn and John, Lykke Li, Okkervil River, K'Naan, Friendly Fires (the show we didn't get to see at Detroit on Tuesday), Clipse. Holy poop. See you out there.
Hey, did you know it's hot here today? 98 degrees at last word. But it "feels" like, I dunno, a billion? Yep. Pretty awesome. Trying to summon my (in?)famous reserves of ENDLESS ENERGY, but not necessarily succeeding. The Cure are probably going to play like three hours today. That's pretty cool. Is it cool enough to keep us all alive until then? Only time will tell. I'm more sweat than man at this point. Like Hydro-Man, from Spider-Man. But made out of sweat, instead of just regular water. Ther
I just excavated myself from what seemed like miles of Cure fans. That was a close one. Check out our Twitter for real-time Cure setlist updates for as long as I can maintain such a pace; so far we've had classics like "Lovesong" and "Pictures of You" mixed in with some lesser-known tracks. Most likely they're just getting started--they got going about a half hour late, too. That picture is of the set from just before they got started, while I was still packed in with said Cure devotees. I keep
Well, that was weird. As the Cure inched towards the three hour mark of their setlist and launched into their iconic "Boys Don't Cry" as part of their third encore, THE PLUG GOT PULLED. First sound, then stage lights/video screen. Weird move in general, especially with a legendary band headlining a major festival. In a pretty badass move, Robert Smith and co. continued with "Jumping Someone Else's Train," before finally relenting.
Odd note to end things on. But now it's time to drive home.Final
Friday's Grand Duchy show at Detroit Bar was a real treat. For some reason, I kind of forgot that the show was that day, and hadn't made the proper arrangements to attend, and was essentially turned away at the door when I got there. That was a bummer, for sure. I was able to check out Venus Infers across the street at eVocal, though, so that was a nice consolation prize. (They sounded really good, per usual, though the attendance was poor--perhaps because so many people were at Detroit).
Coachella may be a distant, sweaty, sticky memory at this point, but that doesn't mean that I'm willing or able to shut up about it quite yet. Beth Stirnaman had some car troubles, causing her arduous trek from Indio to be delayed (and nothing's better than being stuck in Indio when there isn't a huge music festival going on), but did that stop her from delivering these great day three images? Heck no! Check them out here. She got Peter Bjorn & John, Perry Farrell, K'naan, the Yeah Yeah Yeah
Travis SchneiderReally, it's almost embarrassing how much I like LA-based pop band Army Navy. After seeing them open up for the Shys last October at Detroit Bar, I pushed their self-titled record (released on their own label, Fever Zone Records) on anyone that would listen. Songs like "Slight of Hand" and "Saints" are simply way too much fun not to be shared.I'm pretty giddy that they're coming back into town this week--Thursday, June 25 at the Yost Theater in Santa Ana, in a show sponsored by U

My hearing still hasn't recovered from a blistering set by the legendary Dinosaur Jr. who played a sold out show at the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa.
It's not often that Pearl Jam, the Rolling Stones, No Doubt, U2, the Cure, the Dave Matthews Band and Bruce Springsteen perform a free concert in Long Beach. In fact, it's never happened. Unfortunately, you can add tomorrow as just another one of those days when that dream bill won't come to fruition. But what do you do when you can't see the real deal? Tribute bands. Yes, that's right, a bunch of groups with names that have something to do with the artists they cover are playing a free show in L
Fever DragonWe told you back in May about Long Beach's Repeater working with renowned producer Ross Robinson (Korn, The Cure, At the Drive-In); a heck of a coup for an unsigned act. Now that the record they've been working on is finished, the band's out of Robinson's Venice Beach compound--where they stayed during the recording of their sophomore album--and back to performing in front of Southern California audiences. One such gig is tonight at Fullerton's Continental Room, with openers Beat

Way back in May, we told you about how Long Beach band Repeater were hand-picked by big-time producer Ross Robinson (the Cure, Korn, At the Drive-In, buckets of other various stuffs) to serve as his next project. We met with them at Robinson's home studio in Venice Beach--where the band lived for weeks while recording an album.
It's easy to forget how big the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine actually is. Most people probably don't spend that much time thinking about it. Probably about as much time as you spend thinking about its water park neighbor, Wild Rivers, in the middle of October. But after a hilly, five minute trek from the entrance to the stage, it hits you that this place was built like a rock concert monolith. On Saturday they got their biggest one of the month, courtesy of "Jack's Fourth Show," ho
