  • Beatallica: Because the Beatles & Metallica Need the Money

Ever wonder what Beatles songs done in Metallica's heavy, hyper style would sound like? Me neither. But the clever buggers in Beatallica thought this would be a smashing concept; hence the forthcoming release of Sgt. Hetfield's Motorbreath Pub Band (out July 10 on Oglio Records). The group consist of Jaymz Lennfield, Grg Hammetson, Kliff McBurtney and Ringo Larz. They put the pun in punishment. As is the case with most of these novelty projects that aren't Spinal Tap, the song titles are the m

  • The Monkees' "Porpoise Song (Theme From HEAD)" Vs. The Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever"

With chatter about the 40th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper's and "Strawberry Fields Forever"/"Penny Lane" single and reissues of two of the Monkees' best albums (Headquarters and Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd.) fresh in my mind, I am compelled to compare two of the best songs by these iconic pop groups via the magnetic charm of YouTube. The Monkees' "Porpoise Song" (written by Gerry Goffin/Carole King) is some kind of ultimate watery bliss pop hatched from cynical music-biz vets looking t

  • Melvins, Detroit Bar, October 24, 2007

Melvins' Buzz Osborne, redefining "hair metal." I'll make this brief because intern Alex Vallejo will be posting a more exhaustive report later today, but I just wanted to say that underground-metal masters Melvins came, saw and conked our noggins with their patented planet-shifting sound. No surprise there. However, what was surprising was Melvins' cover of the Beatles' “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” which they dispensed with poker faces and terseness early in their hour-plus set. Of the bi

  • Live(ish) from Coachella: Paul McCartney Plays Nearly his Entire 50-year Catalogue

Hey, so sorry for not being very update-y last night: my iPhone's Internet apparently decided that we were no longer on speaking terms, and I didn't have any time to make it over to the LUXURIOUS PRESS TENT! because I was too busy seeing shows, man. So allow me to make up for lost time here.Paul McCartney closed down last night, of course. Oh boy did he. He played for two and a half hours (maybe closer to 2:40?), which I think is actually pretty typical for his recent solo shows, but an eternity

  • OC Turns Brit as 'BritWeek' Begins

Is Tony Blair a Freemason? The video above seems to think so. Oddly, some evidence behind the claim is provided by Martin Short, although it is unclear if he was doing so as himself, Jiminy Glick, Ed Grimley, Katharine Hepburn or Jackie Rogers Jr. What is as clear as London fog is the freewheelin', possibly Freemasonin' former prime minister arrives in Beverly Hills Tuesday evening for a private gala kicking off BritWeek, which is more like "BritMonth" considering the range of events and acti

  • Play That Riff...Literally

Fu Manchu guitarist Bob Balch has a website devoted to music lessons. Now, that in itself isn't newsworthy, but I did a little snooping and realized he's really onto something.   Anyone who ever took a lesson knows how boring they are. A 14-year-old wants to learn Metallica riffs (at least I did), not pentatonic, major and minor scales. Balch seems to know this and has set up videos by musicians from bands such as Fu Manchu (duh), the Dwarves, Helmet, TSOL, Torche, Monster Magnet, the Dicki

  • The Beatles: Rock Band Out Now

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past month (and if you have been, is the rock renting? Cuz I could use a cheaper place), you know that today -- 9/9/09 -- marks the official release date of The Beatles: Rock Band. That's right folks, the music industry sucks so hard that not only is it relying on the Beatles to generate some cash, it's relying on a freakin' video game with the Beatles in it to generate some cash.As someone over the age of 25 with hobbies, I've never played Guitar

See her latest brush with the law under Saturday, Sept. 26.It's the Weekly's weekly round-up of local police calls--now with more Tawny Kitaen arrests

  • Before It Gets Old: Guitar Hero: The Beatles

OK, so the jokes in this video will surely fly over the heads of all but the most ardent rhythm game enthusiasts, but there are a ton out there at this point, so I feel pretty secure in posting this. Tomorrow is Beatles Day across the globe--what with the much anticipated release of not only The Beatles: Rock Band, but also the entire remastered Beatles catalog and the Stereo and Mono boxed sets. Everyone seems to agree that The Beatles: Rock Band is much more "Norwegian Wood" than "Yellow Subma
