Dirty Money's Jay Cash: Bank on his taste.
I lost my Dirty Money cherry last night and am wondering why I waited so long to do so. The Wednesday weekly at Avalon gave me a much-needed dose of hot new electronic dance music that was mostly well-mixed and intelligently selected. Sure, lots of people were dancing on the club's tiny floor, but you should've seen me taking notes and trainspotting. Man, it was breathtaking...

Scarlett has Tom on her side.
Scorching-hot actor Scarlett Johansson (Lost in Translation, Ghost World, Match Point) will be releasing her debut album, Anywhere I Lay My Head (I have some suggestions), May 20 on Atco/Rhino. The disc includes one original Johansson composition and 10 interpretations of Tom Waits songs. TV on the Radio's David Sitek, Yeah Yeah Yeahs' guitarist Nick Zinner, Celebration's Sean Antanaitis and others lent their talents to the Scarlett opus, which was recorded at Lo
The two-day lineup for this year's San Diego Street Scene was just announced today, and it doesn't look half bad, in this humble ex-music editor's opinion. Headliners include Beck, the Black Crowes, X, Tegan and Sara, Justice, plus Spoon, TV on the Radio, STS9 (Sound Tribe Sector 9), Michael Franti & Spearhead, The National, Atmosphere, Cat Power, Hot Chip, The New Pornographers, Vampire Weekend, The Hives, Cold War Kids, Ghostland Observatory, Spiritualized, Antibalas, Man Man, The Mother Hips,
Goldenvoice announced today that next year’s Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival - the world famous annual haven of indie rock, electronic music and sweating at the Empire Polo Fields in Indio - will take place Friday, April 17, Saturday, April 18 and Sunday, April 19.
Yes, that's the third weekend in April, not the fourth weekend like it's always been in the past. OK, sure, it was the first weekend of May in 2004, but close enough. And in 1999 it was in October, but that was the show's fi
It's getting to the point where the idea of the Coachella lineup is actually more appealing than whatever the eventual Coachella lineup will be, even if the actual lineup is really impressive. It's like Spock said, "having is not such a pleasing thing as wanting."So yeah, still no official Coachella bill, but a relatively entertaining fake one has made the rounds, with a mix of heavily rumored names (Paul McCartney, The Killers, Fleet Foxes), reasonable estimates (The Knux, She & Him, Yeasay
Christopher VictorioFrom the Oct. 30 Jenny Lewis concert at the Orpheum in Los Angeles. They have hotels in Pomona, right? You might want to invest on one for the week of April 13, where the Glass House is taking advantage of their proximity to Indio with a stellar slate of boner-shattering acts coming to the venue before Coachella kicks off that weekend.
Based on the strength of their six-song EP (entitled, uh, EP), Long Beach's Crystal Antlers were signed to Chicago's Touch and Go, the same label that helped bring the world the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and TV on the Radio. So given that, you can imagine how hotly anticipated (so hot!) their first full-length record, Tentacles, is among discriminating music lovers. Though the physical album (yes, those still exist) doesn't hit stores (yes, those still exist too, at least for now) until April 7, you can g
The Glass House's pre-Coachella week--already boasting Jenny Lewis, TV on the Radio, Conor Oberst and The Black Keys--has added another Coachella artist playing a pre-festival gig, LA's Silversun Pickups on Sunday, April 12. Tickets are $12.50 and go on sale this Friday, March 13 for $22.50. Silversun Pickups, who also played the fest in 2007, are playing the big ol' Indio hullabaloo on Friday, April 17. You may best remember them for their mainstream rock radio hit "Lazy Eye," which prompted mo
Like any local fan, I'm always excited to see bands we've written about in the Weekly get some solid recognition elsewhere. Okay, so maybe Pomona is not too far elsewhere, but the April calendar at The Glass House has great OC/LB talent opening up for some Coachella caliber acts. The jazzy jam artists of Free Moral Agents, created by Mars Volta keyboardist Ikey Owens, landed a prime opening gig for their New York buddies TV On the Radio on April 14, days before they take the stage in Indio. Afte
Even if you're not making it out to Coachella this weekend, there's plenty of runoff 'round these parts to keep you satisfied, with a plethora of artists playing the festival hitting us up on the way to Indio.
Last Night: TV on the Radio and Free Moral Agents at Glass HouseBetter Than: Trying to literally watch t.v. on a radio.Download: Dear Science by TVotR...as if you already haven't. It's rare and weird to feel a sense of victory going to a concert before it even starts. But as the chilly Pomona winds brushed my back rounding the corner of the Glass House on Second St., I couldn't wipe the smile off my face even if I tried. Not only was I going to see one of the main bands I was
Watching Blitzen Trapper RIGHT NOW in the Gobi tent. Rootsy rocky. Y'know. Pleasant enough. "Kinda boring," said OC Weekly''s Nate Jackson. "Not bad if I was seeing them at the Gypsy Den." Or maybe he said Gypsy Lounge? Who could say.
Saturday has gotten knocked for not being up to par, but it's more loaded than given credit for: Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes, Jenny Lewis, TV on the Radio, Mastodon and Atmosphere all ahead. And the Killers. Yeah.
I heard Joss Stone as we entered today. Sounded lik
Sup. Broadcasting LIVE from the Corporately Sponsored AT&T Cool Down Charge Up tent. I am not really doing either at the moment, though.
Philly's Dr. Dog just finished up at the Mojave tent a bit ago, and as Larry David might say, they were "pretty, pretty good." Tracks like "Worst Trip" and "The Beach" ruled it, though they made reference to some problems with their distortion pedal. Aww.
Why are the little booklets with the settimes and the maps always so hard to come by every year?
It's pretty cool that the official on-site record store at Coachella this year is Zia Records, from my hometown of Phoenix. It's been Virgin Megastore in years past, which is not only now out of business, but was always totally totally horrible. A copy of Private Eyes for $18.98? Sure, why not! So check 'em out if you're here, for suresies.
Today is also Record Store Day, a really cool event. Read more about it here.
I think everyone is reading over my shoulder, so I'm leaving the COOL
I'm in the Motel 6, a.k.a. the COMMAND CENTER, but my WiFi expired (24 hours) so I'm iPhoning it in. Pay another $2.99? Heck no!
Let's talk about Saturday for a bit, no?- TV on the Radio were real good. I saw them a few years ago and was kind of "eh" on it, though I always dug their recorded material. This was lightyears from that. Makes me wish I had seen them at the Glass House on Tuesday.- Fleet Foxes, on the side stage (the "outdoor theatre," if you will) got totally DROWNED THE FUCK OUT by
Spencer KornhaberThe "Hand of Man" crushes autos. While Albert's still sweating it out (literally! ha!) at some polo field in the desert, my Coachella experience -- my first Coachella experience -- is over. But it was fun. Why? Top things about Saturday from a neophyte:This is a good festival. Water wasn't too expensive, drunk nekkid hipsters weren't unbearably obnoxious, and it was pretty easy to see and hear most sets no matter how late you arrived. The fire-spewing dragon sculpture and the gia
Thank goodness for Beth Stirnaman. If not for her, our Coachella coverage would consist of my blah blahing and iPhone pictures of stages from the crowd, many yards away. Thankfully, she's got a bundle of great images from day two here, so you can put a face to my inspid ramblings. Remember me raving about TV on the Radio doing songs like "Wolf Like Me"? Well, there's a bunch of TV on the Radio pictures, including this one here of fetching frontman Tunde Adebimpe. She also got Calexico, Fle
Well, here we are again. Monday....ew. But for those of you who came along for the ride at Coachella 2009, the memories are probably still cycling around in your brain somewhere. Otherwise, you'd probably be getting some work done instead of trolling the internet looking for the next Albert Ching blog post. Sorry, but can we give this man a raise, honestly? Not only did he give you 3 days-worth of blurry iPhone pictures and up-to the-second coverage of the whole sha-bang, but he also Twittered y
The Glass House in Pomona has a huge week coming up--Silversun Pickups on Sunday, Jenny Lewis on Monday, TV on the Radio on Tuesday, Conor Oberst on Wednesday and The Black Keys on Thursday--but, always looking towards the future, they've also got some shows coming up beyond that.
Detroit Bar is bringing some more neat stuff to town, including Little Dragon, pictured. The Swedish group is currently on tour with TV on the Radio, and once that wraps up, they'll be hitting Detroit on May 22.One week earlier (and only a little more than two months since his last Detroit appearance), GZA of the Wu-Tang Clan will return to Costa Mesa. Yup, May 15. Also returning to Detroit: Fabrizio Moretti's Little Joy, the new project from the Strokes member, on June 4. They played the venue
Sweden's Little Dragon hits Detroit Bar tonight, fresh from opening up for TV on the Radio for the last good little while. Though they reside in the faraway Scandinavian land, lead singer Yukimi Nagano's mother and grandmother both live in Costa Mesa. Wacky! $15.They've got a really neat moody, spacey electro-pop thing going on--but don't take my word for it. Take Ned Raggett's, who wrote about the band in this week's OC Weekly. Can't make it tonight? No worries--they're playing the Glass House
