​Surfers are being asked to participate in an event called Surfboards in the Sand September 19th in Huntington Beach. Basically, participants will lug their boards and whatever basic creature comforts they can carry down to the sand. There, they will stand shoulder to shoulder, boards sticking nose-first into the beach, posing en masse for an ambitious photo project to be shot by Transworld Surf Magazine.
Huntington Beach native and surfing legend Chris Hawk will be inducted into the Surfers' Hall of Fame this Friday, September 18. Along with his brothers, Chris played a key role in creating Huntington Beach's surf culture in the 1960s and 1970s.
He won national renown for his surfboard shaping, a skill which he diligently learned alongside greats like Reno Abellira, Davie Abbott and Dick Brewer. Surfers all over California knew his reputation and his boards.

Surf spots in San Diego, L.A., and especially Ventura Counties have much more violent reputations. But when the waves are good, tempers can flare.
