  • Steve Aoki at Detroit Bar Dec. 28

Steve Aoki celebrates another smooth transition. A lot of people talk shit about Steve Aoki (a.k.a. Kid Millionaire), especially in OC. He's just a trustafarian, some say (pops founded the Benihana restaurant chain). His DJ skills are wack and his selections mediocre, others claim. He's a marketing whore and the epitome of hipster-dance-scene douchebaggery, yet more others accuse. But Aoki is making things happen, playing out several times a week worldwide, running an indie label (Dim Mak) wi

  • Club Pick Of The Weekend: Boogie Nights Dirty Disco Party At Sutra

If there were ever a guide to throw a great party, Sutra sure got it right this time. The blueprint is simple, although damn near impossible to recreate unless you've got the cred and resources. First thing, you need a theme. Dirty Disco? Boogie Nights? Yep, sounds good. It's been a while since the '70s themed extravaganzas have hit the circuit, so does this mean they're novel again? Looks like it. And put the word "dirty" in front of anything, it just gets infinitely cooler. Next, gotta have

  • Incoming: The Horrors Coming to Detroit Bar and Glass House

Any band with a drummer named "Coffin Joe" has to be worth seeing, right? Well, you'll have your chance to do just so on September 30, when London's The Horrors come to Detroit Bar. Can't make that? Why, they'll be at the Glass House two days later, on October 2! This is the band's return to the area, following their gig opening up for the Kills at the Glass House last month. Tickets for both shows go on sale this Friday; 10 a.m. for the Detroit show and noon for the Glass House. The latter show

  • Dance Music Pick of the Week: Charles Feelgood at Focus (With MP3 Link!)

BY DENNIS ROMEROListen/download "Charles Feelgood vs. Michael Jackson" here.Revealing a favorite DJ can date you like an exotic entertainer who plays Bon Jovi for her pole-dancing finale. (She thinks she's rocking out like it's 1988 on the Sunset Strip, but she's really putting on a sad bio-drama.) Likewise, sometimes it's embarrassing to admit that my favorite spinners--John Digweed, Danny Tenaglia, DJ Dan--all made their first splashes deep within the Clinton era. Kids raised on Steve Aoki, A-

  • TONIGHT: Steve Aoki and DJ Mom Jeans at Detroit Bar

You know something big is going down when both of Detroit Bar's most recognized DJ nights (Busywork and La Boite Funk) have to join forces to host an event. And really, what could be bigger that Steve Aoki performing in mom jeans. Oh wait, correction... playing WITH Mom Jeans. Tonight Steve Aoki, world class electro DJ, Newport Beach native and founder of Dim Mak Records is rocking with actor Danny Masterson (owner of the aforementioned Mom Jeans moniker). A few days before his brief tou

  • Last Night: Steve Aoki & Danny Masterson (DJ Mom Jeans) at Detroit Bar

Doug NeillDJ Mom pants in normal pants and a fedora.Ah, yes, hipster mavens Steve Aoki and Danny Masterson (otherwise known as DJ Mom Jeans, a handle that admittedly rules) brought their MacBook Pros to Costa Mesa and took over Detroit Bar's intimate digs last night, 8/12. It was packed, it was sweaty (hence our foggy lens!), some were shirtless, all were shiny. Doug Neill braved it all and caught it all just for you. Check the sweaty exposed boobs slideshow here!

  • Outgoing: DJ AM Gig at Detroit Bar Postponed

Ah, the concert gods giveth and they taketh away. On the heels of the news that the Detroit Bar is bringing the Duke Spirit to town on Aug. 30, comes word that a DJ AM gig scheduled for July 29 at the very same Costa Mesa venue (the anniversary party for the "Busy Work" dance night) has been postponed. Says Detroit co-owner Jon Reiser: "he is doing some TV series for MTV." So there you go. Keep an eye here for news on when DJ AM might return to the CM, and keep in mind that Detroit and Busy Work

Amanda MiliusRemember the Willows? They're back! In Pog form! Well, that's just not true (unfortunate, yes). But they are back with a new album, Everyone, scheduled for release on November 17. It's their second album on Steve Aoki's Dim Mak label, following 2007's Chautauqua.
