I'll have some more thoughts on the more, uh, interesting choices made by the academy (which I am not a part of, despite what their Web site says) a little later, but for now here's the full list of nominees, unedited from the OC Music Awards press release.
We've written a lot about the resurrection of the historic Yost Theatre in downtown Santa Ana--now operated by Dennis Lluy and booked by Ashley Eckenweiler. It started with November's SoundDowntown, and continues tonight with a show from LA's delightful The Bird and the Bee. I last saw them in fall of 2007 opening for Rilo Kiley, and they were wonderful--and seemed like lovely people! I'm tickled to see them again even if their latest, last month's Ray Guns Are Not Just the Future, has rece
Last Night: The Bird and the Bee, Melanoid, Stacy Clark at the Yost Theatre, Santa Ana, Feb. 26, 2009.Better than: Breaking into the Yost during its dormant period and attempting to put on your own show. Folks, that's illegal, and also pretty weird.Best fashion choice: The bow on Bird and the Bee singer Inara George's retro-chic black and white dress.Aside from a few--well, quite a few--snags with the sound during the Bird and the Bee's headlining set, the first show at the historic Yost Theatre
We've all heard that there's an elegance in simplicity. Well, all of us except for the Orange County Register's music critic/blogger Ben Wener, apparently. Here's the opening paragraph to his nearly 900-word (!) review of U2's latest, No Line on the Horizon. The 10-Tuesday run of OC Music Awards showcases started with four gigs at Detroit Bar, followed by two at Chain Reaction, and two more at eVocal, before moving to the Gypsy Lounge in Lake Forest last week. But nothing lasts forever (and we both know hearts can change), and the final showcase is tonight at the Gyp. Performing: Stacy Clark (pictured), AJ Degrasse, Justin Grennan and HUMANLAB--acts displaying (showcasing, if you will) more of a soul-tinged, piano-based sound than previous showcases
Jack ColemanTazy Phyllipz is known for a couple of things--having more "Zs" in his name than most this side of Eastern Europe, and for spending many years promoting the Orange County music scene. He hasn't slowed down, and is now booking showcases at Slidebar in Fullerton. One such is tonight: a free one from Cory Case (pictured, the winner of "best live acoustic" at the OC Music Awards this year), Stacy Clark, Faded Paper Figures, Melanoid and Venus Infers. Faded Paper Figures--some of them, at
Here's a recipe (pun! sort of!) for an extremely pleasant Wednesday evening: free food from Dave Mau, free music from The New Limb, and tunes spun by DJ Oldboy (also free, natch). Sound like some beautiful dream? No sir and/or ma'am! It's reality tonight at Memphis in Santa Ana, with the latest of the twice-monthly installments of Dinner with Dave.
iPhone battery was dead, so no blurry far away photos this time. Sadface. There's no doubt that I'm at Detroit Bar a lot, and that I've seen the acts that played there last night--Yellow Red Sparks (pictured), Stacy Clark and the New Limb--plenty of times. So how could I possibly keep such an experience fresh? Why, by bringing my mother along, of course.
Word of Michael Jackson's death at age 50 pretty much shut down the Internet, with Twitter in particularly nearly crushing under the weight of the news (failwhales a'plenty!).Unsurprisingly, plenty of local music folks weighed in on Jackson's passing, and here's a sample of some of the more tweeted reactions:The Union Line (@theunionline): "A moment of silence for the king of pop... You'll be missed"Pop Noir (@PopNoir): "Big R.I.P. For Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, Ed McMahon, and Sky Saxon.
Keith MayYou weren't at Detroit Bar last night? Oh, that's a shame. You missed out on some fun: balloons, crowns, birthday cake, The New Limb (whose Lauren Salamone is pictured here), Stacy Clark, a cameo from Cory Case, LA's Civalias, and, it's rumored, a certain alt-weekly music editor may have even been on stage at some point. Maybe. If you would like to peek into this glorious world for just a few fleeting seconds, check out Keith May's slideshow from last night here.
Last night was the second installment of the Monday night residency with The New Limb and Stacy Clark over at Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa. Here are some notable things that happened:
I first wrote about Costa Mesa's The New Limb back in February, with this little bit in Locals Only. We were all so young back then. Little did any of us know then that less than four months later, they would be playing the June residency at Detroit Bar?Well, it's science fact, as they're playing every Monday in June, along with OC singer-songwriter Stacy Clark.
Normally, a television commercial hyping the Canadian release of a cell phone that's been out in America for nearly two months wouldn't be that big of a deal, but it is when the spot uses music from one of our local Orange County artists. It's "Touch and Go" by singer/songwriter Stacy Clark, a song from her new EP that will be on iTunes next week. She recently wrapped recording a new album up in Venice, and I was able to stop by the studio to hear some tracks (they were cool). We first wrote abo
We're all about the sweet tweets here at Heard Mentality--you can read ours and follow us through the little blobbies of text to the right. And we're also fans of local acts the New Limb (pictured) and Stacy Clark, who we've written copious amounts about in the past. And who doesn't love supporting a good cause? So a fundraising event revolving around Twitter and featuring performances from the New Limb and Stacy Clark is sort of a no-brainer for us. (There's also free food.)
Chris BishowOrange County singer/songwriter Stacy Clark is certainly no stranger to "placement" (that's what they call getting your songs in the background of TV, movies or commercials in the, um, "biz")--she had her song "Touch and Go" featured on an ad for the Canadian release of the Palm Pre cell phone just last month, for instance. But you're nobody until you've gotten a song on a CW young adult drama, which is exactly what Ms. Clark has netted for tonight, when her track "All Time Low" (
