Ever wonder what Beatles songs done in Metallica's heavy, hyper style would sound like? Me neither. But the clever buggers in Beatallica thought this would be a smashing concept; hence the forthcoming release of Sgt. Hetfield's Motorbreath Pub Band (out July 10 on Oglio Records). The group consist of Jaymz Lennfield, Grg Hammetson, Kliff McBurtney and Ringo Larz. They put the pun in punishment.
As is the case with most of these novelty projects that aren't Spinal Tap, the song titles are the m
Lux Interior, lead singer for wildly influential (and wildly awesome) psychobilly band the Cramps, passed away yesterday in Glendale at the age of 62. MTV.com is reporting the cause of death as something related to a pre-existing heart condition.
Interior, born Erick Lee Purkhiser, formed the Cramps in 1972 with guitarist (and future wife) Poison Ivy. The duo released tons of records, most of which you should own, and went through so many members you almost wanted to be the drummer in Spinal Tap
Tickets go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. for the Unwigged & Unplugged tour featuring Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer. If you're "in the know," those names might sound familiar. If you're not, I'll spill the beans. The trio are the actors who play the key members in Spinal Tap (the film and the band) and "A Mighty Wind." This is great news because the show is billed as a performance of songs from both along with other random tunes. If you've never seen "A Mighty Wind" or "This
I took piano lessons for years as a kid. Maybe I should have practiced more (read: at all). We talked earlier this week about piano-heavy bands The Fray and Jack's Mannequin coming to Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, and now Keane (pictured), the English band that's been rockin' the 88 keys in one form or another since 1995 before breaking big in 2004 with "Somewhere Only We Know," are coming to the Grove of Anaheim on May 10. Tickets are $37 (yipes!) and go on sale this Saturday (March 21) at noo
Bet you had pretty much forgotten all about Live, didn't you? Well. They didn't forget about you. Their love is. Like water. They're coming to town, and tickets are on sale tomorrow. And so is other stuff!
The Voids are one of the best local punk bands. They've been playing since 1998 and for some reason, they aren't bigger than they are. They should be huge, but what do I know?
Singer Adri and guitarist Chris have gone through more members than Black Flag and Spinal Tap combined, but their current lineup has my friend Nick on drums. Even if he wasn't playing with them, I'd recommed checking out their show this Saturday at Alex's Bar in Long Beach. With him, it's a must.
England's loudest band, Spinal Tap, was on Conan last night. Not only did they play "Heavy Duty," they sat down with the very tall redhead to discuss their new record, Back from the Dead, which comes out today. The 19-track disc compiles classic tunes such as "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight," "Rock 'n' Roll Creation," "Hell Hole" and "Big Bottom" with six new songs powerful enough to kill even the toughest drummer. Back from the Dead also comes with a DVD and a fold-out/pop-up diorama of Davi
Travis SchneiderOur talk with Army Navy's Justin Kennedy was lengthy enough to (hopefully!) justify two separate blog posts--last time we talked about the LA band's return to Orange County and the acts that helped shape their refined pop sound, this time we talk about their excellent self-titled debut record, their appealingly wacky videos and Kennedy's musical past with Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie megafame.Army Navy play tonight at the Yost Theater in downtown Santa Ana, headlining at 10
The booze-up, held at Irvine Lake from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., will feature the county's best breweries, plus domestic and international brands, including ones from Hawai'i, Brazil and, of course, Belgium. Look out for The Bruery (from Placentia), TAPS (Brea), Bootlegger's Brewery (Fullerton) and the Newport Beach Brewing Company, plus Duchy Originals (from England), which I blogged about recently, He'Brew (The Chosen Beer), Hangar 24 Craft Brewery and tons more. Over 60, in fact. There'll be BBQ
Beth StirnamanBadass gramps. We had quite possibly the shittiest weather for a weekend full of outdoor activities--with temperatures reaching into the triple digits, we spent our weekend, well, kind of constantly moist. But that's okay: We trudged on. For you, our readers. For. You.First up, on Friday and Saturday, OC Weekly photographer Beth Stirnaman braved the heat and hit up the San Diego Street Scene music festival. The two-day event featured everyone from M.I.A., Public Enemy (a brief si
Long Beach has a lot of bands, but none of them exemplify pure rock 'n' roll as well as D-Strutters. The group--singer/guitarist Joe Roads, guitarist George Velvet, bassist Tony and drummer Heath--leave all pretense behind for a straight-ahead bombastic blast like the Stones would be writing if they weren't 90 years old. If you don't know them, now you do, because here's an interview with Roads. If you can't catch D-Strutters Friday at the Slide Bar, you're in luck because they're also
Shuli Egar is a hard-working man. When he's not covering breaking news stories such as the Craptacular (two guys competing to see who could shit the most over a 24-hour period) for the Howard 100 News team on Sirius Satellite Radio, he's hosting the Miserable Men show every Sunday, contributing to the team on The Jay Thomas Show or traveling across the country nearly every weekend to perform stand-up comedy. Oh yeah, he's also having his first child--a daughter--in March. The 35-year-old is p
