Jimmy Breslin on the assassination of Robert Kennedy in the Times today here. Say Brez:
You couldn't get the gun out of the hand of the shooter. Hands grabbed and yanked and twisted but could not get it. The gun waved and people jumped away from it and now Roosevelt Grier, the immense professional football lineman, grabbed the shooter and got this huge arm around his neck from behind, and somebody screamed, "Kill him!" and Roosevelt just stared. All he had to do was tighten the arm and the guy
Initial media reports about Sunday's improbable double killing at a ritzy Laguna Beach resort didn't mention who did the killing.
Call me jaded, but that's odd. Always pause when journalists fail to provide answers to the basics: Who? What? When? Where? How? In this case, the Who? and the How? were missing or wrong. Oops.
Based on Sgt. Jason Kravetz, a Laguna Beach police spokesman, first reports in the Orange County Register suggested that a "wild . . . crazy" married couple may have perished
Highly reliable law enforcement sources gave OC Weekly access to audio tape recordings from Sunday's police killing of two guests at the ritzy Laguna Beach Montage Resort & Spa.
The audio reveals that the city's police officers repeatedly pleaded with Kevin and Joni Park to put down a gun they'd brought to their $2,200-a-night oceanfront bungalow. Both ignored the police orders. Oddly, the woman even asked officers to call police.
The officers, who must have been spooked, told Joni that th
Earlier this month, Deputy Joseph William Balicki walked out of the Ronald Reagan federal courthouse in Santa Ana a happy man--off the hook for a killing. The veteran deputy, who has a history of questionable conduct involving Latinos, gunned down Roberto Peralez during a 2003 traffic stop in Stanton. Peralez, an unarmed 69-year-old man with a checkered criminal past, failed to obey all of Balicki's commands at the scene and was shot three times in the chest and heart. Ten minutes later Balicki
It's a sad fact that Orange County serves as home to numerous shills pretending to be journalists, but we've also been blessed with excellent reporters who've served their time here before graduating to the national and international stage. To name a few: Dexter Filkins, who has won acclaim for his fearless Iraq War coverage in the New York Times, and best-selling author J.R. Moehringer.
The next rising star might be The Orange County Register's Peggy Lowe, who has made often cynical and bitch
Years after the glove didn't fit and we had to acquit, countless Larry King Live appearances and actor Phil Morris' career zenith with the Seinfeld Jackie Chiles parody, Johnnie Cochran Jr. is coming back to Orange County to right an alleged racial injustice. OK, so Mr. Cochran departed for that Great Ambulance Chase in the Sky back in 2005, but The Cochran Firm he started 40 years ago will represent the family of Julian Alexander, the 20-year-old newlywed and father-to-be who was mistakenl

Late, great OC Weekly music editor Buddy Seigal is shown here (under the stage name Buddy Blue) performing his tune "Gun Sale at the Church" with the San Diego-based, '80s cowpunk band The Beat Farmers (still going strong as The Farmers despite the loss of Buddy and founder Country Dick Montana). Seigal/Blue's song was a playful jab at the then-budding Moral Majority, but it does not sound so far-fetched now. Steve Smick kneeled before a cross at Crystal Cathedral before killing himself with a
