The Police

Honda Center, Anaheim
Better Than: Sting solo.
Sting and Stewart Copeland have aged as well as most of the Police’s back catalog; Andy Summers, not so much (he looked like a marathoner in his 25th mile by the third song). To my mild surprise, the trio, who have owned a sizable chunk of the radioscape since 1978, yet again have become a well-oiled hit machine a mere 21 years after their last concert together. The sold-out Honda Center crowd was, to paraphrase one espe
Last night the ever ethereal Blonde Redhead and instrument-hopping Midnight Movies played a sold out show at the Glass House in Pomona.
Los Angeles based Midnight Movies opened, keeping the starry-eyed audience’s attention with a mix of slow droning vocals and constantly switching instruments. Most impressive was Sandra Vu, who changed from drums to bass to flute.
Vocalist Gena Olivier, whose stage presence was reminiscent of a modern Nico, sometimes would play ritualistic drums while singi
Melvins' Buzz Osborne, redefining "hair metal."
I'll make this brief because intern Alex Vallejo will be posting a more exhaustive report later today, but I just wanted to say that underground-metal masters Melvins came, saw and conked our noggins with their patented planet-shifting sound. No surprise there.
However, what was surprising was Melvins' cover of the Beatles' “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” which they dispensed with poker faces and terseness early in their hour-plus set. Of the bi
In Pomona, Sunday nights have a habit of turning the hipster haven of Second Street into a ghost town. That is, unless the Glass House crowd has something to say about it. And last weekend, they made their presence loud and clear.
In anticipation of a sold out show by The Black Keys, hoards of scraggly-haired riff rock connoisseurs lined the street. Together they waded in a single file sea of conversation and cigarette smoke for a night of grit, sweat and guitars.
Before the show even started
Last Night: Smashing Pumpkins at the Gibson Amphitheater, Universal City, Dec. 3, 2008.Better Than: Watching your friends play as Billy Corgan in Guitar Hero World Tour.Download: The video for G.L.O.W. on MySpace Music.Vocalist/guitarist Billy Corgan would exclaim "don't give up on us yet!" as The Smashing Pumpkins capped their successful two-night stand at the Gibson Amphitheatre, with a career-spanning two and a half hour set that delved into the past while gazing (everlastingly?) into the fut
In this recession-plagued economy, the most enticing word has to be free. Free is good, free is seductive. It usually doesn't really matter what that free is (within reason). As long as you don't have to pay for it then why in the world are you complaining?
To capitalize on that theme, here are a series of classical concerts coming up this month that are family friendly, fun, and--did I mention--free? Just remember to bring some beach chairs, blankets and munchies. After that, sit back and r
The second Tuesday in August brings us some notable new releases including, The Fear of God, from Showbread, Let's Build Something To Break from After Midnight Project, Hot Mess from Cobra Starship, and a new single from Brand New, who's latest album, Daisy, hits shelves on September 22. Hot Mess is Cobra Starship's third full length release since forming in 2006 after the band Midtown split up and lead singer Gabe Saporta decided to venture into the synthpop, alternative dan
by Doug BirnbaumOk, so it's not exactly news that's happening in Orange County, but it certainly involves surfers who live and surf in Orange County. We at Wax On, Wax Off sort of tend to stalk the Japanese Motors a bit, no matter where they might be. They're right up there as one of our favorite non-surf-band bands of surfers. Guitarist Nolan Hall, along with drummer Andrew Atkinson and bassist Nick Soderberg, are headed to Portland via plane this afternoon to play at tomorrow's Scion Garage
Three and a half weeks ago, we
mentioned that Long Beach avant rockers Free Moral Agents (featuring keyboardist
Ikey Ownes of the Mars Volta) are going out on the road with
El Paso band Zechs Marquise. We all found that they hadn't booked any hometown
show dates yet. Excuse our tardiness, but it appears that the band has added a
show at their neighborhood stomping grounds at the Prospector. And as the title
of this blog suggests, you don't have much time to make up your mi
