  • Nguyen-Nguyen Situation

Sigh. The LA Times reports today that the Los Angeled Police Department officer who paid for the now-infamous letter to Spanish-speaking immigrants in Orange County is none other than Mark Nguyen. Mark is said to have paid $4,000 for the letter's dissemination under a fake name, and he lives with the officially unnamed Tan Nguyen staffer who allegedly sent out the letter without Tan's knowledge. Mark is also Tan's close friend from back in 1992 when they met as fellow Bruins at UCLA. Tan Nguyen

  • The Real Reason Why 241 Toll Road Plan Failed!

Full disclosure: I'm not too informed on the 241 Toll Road. I don't see how extending it to San Onofre will reduce traffic on the 5 Freeway. I don't surf so don't particularly care if the legendary waves of Trestles disappeared. I do know that the Transportation Corridor Authority is one of Orange County's worst governmental agencies, and that environmentalists care a bit too much about nature at the expense of other issues. But after hearing both sides go at it yesterday on AirTalk with Larry

  • More on Huell Howser and the Evil TCA

The strangest part in my interview with Huell Howser this week was learning that the Transportation Corridor Authority tried to get his special on San Onofre State Beach delayed. I knew the TCA hated ol' Huell for his opposition to extending the 241 Toll Road through San Onofre State Park, further testimony that the TCA is the county's most-evil organization since the only people possible who'd rag on Huell are Nazis and Satanl, but to actually, actively try to fuck with Huell's scheduling? Not

  • From "Acknowledged Leader" to Convicted Felon for Reed Diehl

Reed Diehl, during better days at Cal.UPDATED WITH THE TWO CENTS OF THE FBI...With the guilty plea in a multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme entered by Reed Diehl, the standout Mater Dei High School center who went on to an impressive college football career at the University of California and a brief stint with the Tennessee Titans, it's interesting to look back at some of what was written years ago about the Coto de Caza man now facing up to 70 years in prison. (See refinement of this by the FBI

  • Local Muslim Woman Featured on "Speaking of Faith"

Proud Bruin and MuslimSpeaking of Faith is one of the country's better public radio shows, a thoughtful, hour-long examination of faith in its many manifestations that local listeners can find every Sunday at 3 p.m. on KPCC-FM 89.3. Last week, the show devoted itself to Muslim listener-submitted reflections on Ramadan, and one of the 14 selected for airing came from Costa Mesa resident Parisa Popalzai, an Afghan native and UCLA graduate (go Bruins!) who spoke eloquently about her religious aw

  • UCI Anteaters Bound for Bruinsville to Protest Tuition Hikes

All eyes from the University of California system, and some from outside it, will be on UCLA today and tomorrow. No, not to observe the Bruins licking their wounds from Monday night's embarrassing loss to Cal State Fullerton on the Pauley Pavilion hardwood. It's at UCLA where the UC Board of Regents, the governing body over the 10-campus system, will vote today on whether to implement 32 percent tuition hikes in the face of massive budget shortfalls. On Thursday, the board is scheduled t
