Orange County product Monique Powell--she of Save Ferris fame, natch--has a new project called The Mojo Wire, and they're opening up tonight for The Growlers at Detroit Bar. It's a lot more hard rocky than the early No Doubt-esque bouncy ska of Save Ferris, which is kinda disorienting; but given that bouncy ska is a pretty hard sell in the year 2008, it's probably the right move.
Things sure have changed for one of Orange County's biggest success stories since we last checked in. But babies, weddings, solo careers, clothing labels have been finally put aside: No Doubt has announced they'll be reforming for a comeback tour in 2009--but don't expect a new record any time soon. The band released a statement Dec. 3 via their official website that they're currently working on tour dates, along with their first (professional) group photograph in years (pictured).

Tonight is the annual "Vandals Christmas Formal" at the House of Blues in Anaheim, and we talked earlier this week about No Doubt getting back together in 2009, so what better OCriffic song for today than No Doubt's cover of Vandals Christmas tune "Oi to the World"? None more better.Unfortunately, all the videos on YouTube have "embedding disabled by request" (the Internet's becoming a real police state) so check it out here.
Alright, so there aren't any official tour dates yet, but a few babies and weddings later, No Doubt has finally officially confirmed they will indeed be touring Summer 2009. Starting this May, the band will be making stops at larger amphitheaters and arenas all through out the United States and Canada with current KROQ sensation Paramore (hey, it could be worse). Swedish synth pop group the Sounds and Canadian band Bedouin Soundclash will provide additional backup on select tour dates. While the
Live Nation and Universal Music Group have announced a new promotion for No Doubt's big return tour this summer: If you buy a seat in the "top tier ticket price levels," you will receive digital copies of "No Doubt's entire music career." Yes, the obvious question is why would someone that didn't already have all that stuff buy an expensive ticket to see them, but ours is not to wonder why; ours is but to download and die. "Top tier ticket price levels" is defined as non-lawn, non-lower-tier tic
(Yes, I could have used another No Doubt picture to illustrate this blog, but I'm using this Katy Perry pic instead. Deal with it. We need hits.) Waaay sold out. No Doubt has added yet another Verizon Wireless Amphitheater show--their fourth!--to their triumphant reunion tour, this one happening on August 4. The July 31, August 1 and August 2 shows are all already sold out (as are three shows at the Gibson Amphitheatre). Tickets for this one are on sale next Saturday (NEXT Saturday), April 4, at
It's easy to hate on Live Nation, but they've been involved in some alright stuff lately, like the Blink 182 lawn seats that cost $20, straight-up--inclusive of parking and service fees and all that yakkety yak. The latest is "no service fees Wednesdays," which will run throughout the summer and starts this Wednesday (tomorrow!), June 3. As the name suggests, it removes dreaded service fees from lawn tickets from all sorts of big shows, like 311, Aerosmith, Coldplay, No Doubt and Dave Matthews B
Well, hopefully someone will post a better video of this, but here's No Doubt's appearance on Gossip Girl last night. They played an '80s parallel universe version of themselves (called "Snowed Out," ahahahahaha, so clever) in a mostly flashback episode meant to test the waters for a possible spinoff starring Brittany Snow at a young Lily Rhodes (what we call in the business a "backdoor pilot"). They performed their cover of "Stand and Deliver" by Adam and the Ants, the same tune they played dur
Concert promoters LiveNation are offering a pretty good deal for upcoming shows at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater (and other venues across the country that, if you are reading the OC Weekly, you probably don't care that much about). The catch is, it's good only today.Anyone who buys lawn tickets to shows at the mega Irvine venue will pay only $24.99. And to make the deal even sweeter, there are no additional fees. Yeah, you're sitting a mile away, but the lawn's where all the good weed is, so
It's not often that Pearl Jam, the Rolling Stones, No Doubt, U2, the Cure, the Dave Matthews Band and Bruce Springsteen perform a free concert in Long Beach. In fact, it's never happened. Unfortunately, you can add tomorrow as just another one of those days when that dream bill won't come to fruition. But what do you do when you can't see the real deal? Tribute bands. Yes, that's right, a bunch of groups with names that have something to do with the artists they cover are playing a free show in L
Yeah, No Doubt is obviously one of the biggest bands from Orange County of all time. (Some might say "the;" feel free to debate that point as much as you'd like!) As such, it's appropriate that their return to Orange County--after a five-year layoff, save a quickie reunion during the encore of one of Gwen Stefani's solo shows in 2007--is appropriately big.Tonight begins four shows at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine (the same site as their 2007 jam), and we'll have a goodly amount of c
Andrew YoussefHometown heroesIt was the weekend: The weekend No Doubt, on their sold-out reunion tour, came back to town to play an anticipated four nights at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine. While most of the band has since relocated north to Long Beach (and Los Angeles, but let's not speak of that) since meeting mega, worldwide success, we still think No Doubt's a big contender for, well, the biggest band to ever come out of Orange County. Aw. Check out the amazing photos from p
Andrew YoussefDon't be fooled! This picture is from Saturday's show!Friday night at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater--the first of No Doubt's four sold-out hometown shows and the beginning of the end of the band's reunion tour--I sat in my seat the Irvine venue not quite knowing what to expect from these aging locals.
No zoom on the iPhone, folks!Last Night: No Doubt, Katy Perry, the Sounds at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, Irvine; August 4, 2009.Better than: The three previous No Doubt shows at Verizon. Maybe. Actually, they were probably all equally fantastic, unless you hate Katy Perry.Number of dudes dressed up in Alice in Wonderland-esque garb like Gwen Stefani in the "What You Waiting For" video: Only spotted one. Which was plenty.Do you enjoy...joy? Well, you'd probably have had a swell time at the
Gwen Stefani may have left town --along with the rest of No Doubt--after a four-night run in Irvine, but I wonder if she had time to eat the dish named after her at the Anaheim White House while she was in OC.Yes, indeed, Ravioli Gwen Stefani--lobster-filled ravioli with basil on a sauce of ginger and citrus--is high up on the list of appetizers (at lunch) and antipasti (dinner). But, wait there's more! You can also tuck into Ahi Tuna Tartare Ferragamo, Gnocchi al Pomodoro Calvin Klein and Pa

more--with a packed stadium, screaming fans and unparalleled energy on stage and, well, everywhere. Now, it's late. So here's a playlist from night one to give you a little taste of what you missed. More to com
If you thought Verizon Wireless Amphitheater could only be used for big-name bands like Blink 182 and No Doubt, well, you're stupid. (OK, you're not stupid. Misguided, maybe.) Exhibit A: Power 106's "Comedy Fiesta" show, happening on September 26 at the 16,00-capacity venue formerly known as Irvine Meadows. It's an, uh, eclectic lineup of big-time comedy names. Headliners are the reunited Cheech & Chong, who are joined by the polarizing-to-say-the-least Carlos Mencia, Gabriel Iglesias (wh
Time to back up our words. In last week's "Best of" issue, the OC Weekly declared Costa Mesa's the New Limb to be the "best live band" in Orange County. Quite the title! And you judge for yourself, tonight, for free. With free food, too. Pretty good deal, all things considered.
No band likes to be turned into a "virtual karaoke circus act." But that's exactly what No Doubt's manager Jim Guerinot is saying about the band's disapproval about having their likenesses placed in Band Hero, the latest abomination of button-pushing musicianship created by Activision. Yesterday, the band slapped the video game company with a lawsuit claiming that the way their images were used was done unlawfully and without permission. According to the Associated Press, No Doubt o
