When you think of soldiers and especially those killed in action, you generally conclude most came from the poorer parts of town. But with five young servicemen cut down in their primes, Irvine is the Orange County hometown with the most war dead from the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. It's also the fourth best place to live in the country, according to new Money magazine rankings that would have placed Irvine higher were real estate not so expensive there.

Lance MacLeanMission Viejo Mayor Pro Tem Lance MacLean sent out a press release a little more than an hour ago responding to the recall petition presented to him two Mondays ago. Here is the 200-word statement to voters that he's legally asked to issue:"I have been honored to represent you since 2002 and I am proud of my verifiable accomplishments. In conjunction with ALL my City of Mission Viejo council colleagues Kelley, Ury, Ledesma and Schlicht, I have delivered on my promise to improv

Okay, I guess we all saw this coming. Local Natives have officially changed their origin to Silver Lake on their Myspace page....sigh, okay guys. Well, hopefully you and the OC can still be friends. For those of you who have followed the harmaonizing echoes, rumbling rhythms and spangly guitar chords of this band since their Mission Viejo days, tomorrow may be one of the slim chances you get to rock out to these guys in South County for a month or so, maybe more. They will be playing The Gypsy L
Spencer Kornhaber / OCWApril 15, 2009. Remember that? Best day of your life, right? Not just because you got to pay taxes, but rather because you got a chance to complain about paying those taxes. The Weekly, at least, had a pretty good time at last month's tax-hating/liberals-bashing Tea Party in Santa Ana. We covered it here, and even made a pretty slideshow of all the crazy signs and costumes! Santa Ana may have been OC's biggest anti-tax bash that day, but there was a slew of other ones too.
Ed Piskor / OC WeeklyMore than a month after Mission Viejo Mayor Pro Tem was presented a letter stating the intention of 51 citizens to have him recalled from office, MacLean's opponents have gotten the go-ahead to begin gathering signatures from the general populace to get the recall on the ballot. Yesterday, Mission Viejo city clerk Karen Hamman finally signed off on the format of the the statement against MacLean, after originally sending it back to recall leader Dale Tyler to have him fix ty
Ed Piskor / OC WeeklyAs I just posted: In Dana Point, when you use state and federal grants to fund a $7 million beautification project disguised as congestion relief, you don't have to worry a whole lot about public scrutiny and can expect a crowd of impressed citizens when you complete the project. But in nearby Mission Viejo, if you want to try and use grant money to build some decorative signs, you better be ready for holy hell to be raised at city council meetings and the local blogosphere.W
The "Clean-Cut Bandit": Coming to a bank near you?MONDAY, JUNE 1Shroomin' in Lagoonan: Laguna Beach Police arrested three people at a La Mirada Street property for alleged possession of hallucinogenic mushrooms, heroin, Xanax, Levitra, Alprazolam and "numerous other unknown pills." Steven Christopher Aiello, 27, of Mission Viejo; Joseph Donovan Black, 26, of Laguna Beach; and Cable Jonathan Jansen, 19, of Aliso Viejo, were arrested on suspicion of trespassing and various drug offenses. Just call him Rev. TeabaggerThe Rev. Wiley Drake, last heard from praying for President Barack Obama's death, leads the list of Orange Countains who have stepped up to lead the "Official Tax Day TEA Party" in their communities on July 4.TEA stands for Taxed Enough Already, by the way. Besides the controversial pastor at First Southern Baptist Church of Buena Park, teabaggers and the towns they represent include: Greyson Peltier, Aliso Viejo; Roberto Guererro, also Buena Park; Barbara Smyth, Dana
Hey, hey, hey, the beauty of all these anti- (take your pick) -tax, -deficit, -progress tea parties was that they were truly grass-roots, free from the partisan political hackery that many believe in responsible for the country's fiscal woes in the first place. Then what to make of the Saddleback Republican Assembly announcing it "is finalizing plans for Mission Viejo's July 4th TEA (Taxed Enough Already) Party"? That sounds about as grass-roots as a monster truck pull. The actual party is expect
Very early Tuesday in Tustin. Not the real crime but an amazing facsimile. Once again, it's the Weekly's weekly round-up of Orange County police calls...MONDAY, JUNE 22Breaking Up the Boredom of a Bank Line: Shortly after noon, a man clutching a backpack threatened to blow up the Bank of America branch near Westcliff Drive and Irvine Avenue in Newport Beach, tossed a bag inside and walked away. Employees and customers evacuated the building and the Orange County Sheriff Department's bomb squad k
Activists from Best Friends, Orange County People for Animals and Last Chance for Animals have stood outside pet stores in Los Angeles, Thousands Oaks and Mission Viejo "educating: shoppers and convincing them to adopt and not buy puppies. Now, the so-called "Puppy Store-Free Orange County" campaign is moving into Brea as well. An OCPA email blast says the Barkworks store in Brea Mall can now expect activists outside. Best Friends already has a regular presence at the Barkworks at the

Hey! I'm OC Weekly's new clubs editor! You may remember me as the guy who hung out with that one birther lady, but forget about that. I'm here for the drinks now. Thus far, this job has pretty much consisted of me revisiting the places I went during childhood, but getting drunk at them. Yeah, I grew up in south OC. I didn't imbibe until I was 18, and that was at far-away college land. I didn't "club" in OC till... a week ago? Something like that.So I'll occasionally be blogging about my post-g
The St. Regis adopts policy banning bailed-out banker parties: Are you ready for this South County disaster?Do your best to imagine the following:The year is 2010. Dana Point Harbor no longer smells like cigarettes, fish and ice cream. The roots have begun to show in Diane Harkey's bang highlights. Laguna Beach High School has switched its

Ed Piskor / OC WeeklyA proponent of the Lance MacLean recall (blogged about earlier today) just tipped me off to a list in published in US News and World Report last week: "10 Cities for Political Junkies." Orange County towns comprise one-fifth of the cities on the list, which seeks to document "where those obsessed with political affairs live." You might assume Santa Ana, with its GOP-run county seat hemmed in by liberal-leaning ethnic communities and activist groups, would make the cut. Di
Late Friday afternoon, the Orange County Registrar of Voters announced it had certified the signatures gathered by Mission Viejo city activists seeking to recall Mayor Pro Tem Lance MacLean. It's a big step for the recall movement, which gathered nearly 14,000 signatures -- though they only needed 9,393 registered Mission Viejo voters to agree to a recall. The city council will ultimately set the date for the recall election, which could be held as early as January 2010.Have no idea what
Watch out, sinning citizens of OC's sinningest towns. The OC Sheriff's Department will be on the streets tonight looking for drunk drivers as part of a federal anti-DUI program that targets "areas that have a high incidence of DUI related arrests and collisions."So, naturally, they're headed for the county's three biggest party zones: Lake Forest, Mission Viejo and Rancho Santa Magarita. That's right. Those of you drinking Patron with your pies at Cocos off Crown Valley, beware. Think twice be

"I can't believe there hasn't been any stories in regards to the foul odor that is covering Mission Viejo, CA like an airborne bacteria," writes a reader named Cori.
