Sat., Nov. 18: Too bad there's already a Best of the Lemonheads album on the shelves, and badder still that it was compiled by Atlantic Records (and not lead Lemonhead, Evan Dando): tonight's set would have made an epic greatest hits tracklist. Tunes from Come on Feel laid like cozy bed buddies with favorites off It's a Shame About Ray ("Turnpike Down," "Alison's Starting to Happen," "Rudderless") and Car Button Cloth ("If I Could Talk I'd Tell You"), saving just enough room for new numbers li
Currently on the endangered species list: your local record store. (You remember those, right?) In a valiant attempt to raise awareness of their existence and importance (and perhaps move some stock), hundreds of independently owned music emporia throughout North America are celebrating Record Store Day by holding special events and sales Friday April 19. Close to OC, Long Beach's Fingerprints and LA's Amoeba are participating.
I highly recommend frequenting a shop or two Saturday and showin
I don't work in the marketing department at DiPiazza's Restaurant & Lounge, but maybe I should. I just took a gander at their April schedule and they've got some great stuff lined up.
Wednesday is Adam's Dagger, a Long Beach band that just had a streaming song on Punknews.
Friday is Fishbone. 'nuff said.
April 10 is Mike Watt the Missingmen, Mojo Wire (featuring Monique Powell, formerly of Save Ferris) and the Jack Brewer Reunion Band (featuring members of Saccharine Trust)
Though I was nowhere near Orange County this weekend (celebrating the religious holiday of your choice up north), there was still plenty of OC Weekly representation at shows around town. Keith May took this lovely pic of legendary punk rocker Mike Watt, of Minutemen/countless other projects fame. The show was Friday at DiPiazza's in Long Beach, pics are here. Friday also saw LA's Lemon Sun and a gaggle of local OC acts (like the New Limb, the Jakes and Dolphin City, all of whom we've written abo
Started in September of 2008, the Long Beach Loop was a monthly event that sounded genuinely fun: the first Thursday of each month, a double-decker bus took folks back-and-forth between beloved LB spots Alex's Bar, The Pike and The Prospector, each of which had concerts going on that night (with sets timed to correspond to bus stops). Long Beach acts like Greater California, the Valley Arena and Free Moral Agents all participated. Music AND a bus, get of town. Sounds rad. And all for $10!I wasn'
Fu Manchu guitarist Bob Balch has a website devoted to music lessons. Now, that in itself isn't newsworthy, but I did a little snooping and realized he's really onto something.
Anyone who ever took a lesson knows how boring they are. A 14-year-old wants to learn Metallica riffs (at least I did), not pentatonic, major and minor scales. Balch seems to know this and has set up videos by musicians from bands such as Fu Manchu (duh), the Dwarves, Helmet, TSOL, Torche, Monster Magnet, the Dicki
The history of the Stooges is long and complicated. Basically, the original group (singer Iggy Pop, drummer Scott Asheton, guitarist Ron Asheton and bassist Dave Alexander) recorded two albums that you should have (The Stooges and Fun House).
Alexander left, then after running through a few bassists, the group disbanded. Until they reunited. For its second go-round, the Stooges re-christened themselves Iggy and the Stooges and had a new lineup that included Pop and drummer Asheton with n
BY MICHAEL COYLELong Beach's Fidorust Records is throwing the 2009 Fidotrust
Fest. It's in four Long Beach bars with mostly Long Beach bands, but Fidotrust label owner and fest promoter Jackie Ojeda hopes to draw people from all over.
Chris Ziegler told you all about Kid Congo Powers (center) in last week's Weekly; what with his past in the Cramps and the Bad Seeds and his new album Dracula Boots with his band the Pink Monkey Birds and their experience recording in Kansas and their show tomorrow at Alex's Bar in Long Beach and all of that. But what we didn't get a chance to tell you is that he's also playing this Saturday in Anaheim, specifically the Juke Joint. That show's alongside Southern California punk rock godfather
