Note: This will be a weekly blog feature, as our award-winning film critic recommends at least one newly released film to see over the weekend. Sometimes it will be speculative; others, based on actual films seen. Opinions of LYT do not necessarily reflect those of other human beings.
DOA: DEAD OR ALIVE
The Weinsteins clearly want to kill this film dead, releasing it on the same day as a mega-budget superhero film starring Jessica Alba, and giving it little or no fanfare. I don't know why –
Neil Gaiman and Henry Selick kick things off by announcing a special screening of some early footage from Coraline, their new stop-motion collaboration. It'll be later in the evening at a nearby theater, and passes can be had at the Rogue booth. Those sitting in Hall H all day at the actual panels are out of luck. They couldn't have just shown us a little bit here? Nahh, make us wait in line all over again for something else.

To Catch--and Pamper!--a Predator: Where the hell is Chris Hansen with Dateline NBC? Why do I ask? Well, in Orange County, authority figures--particularly cops--nabbed for outrageous sexual conduct either get re-elected, promoted or pampered.
The latest example is Jason David Rosewarne. The married Anaheim police officer used his job to meet and molest an underage girl, skipped bail to flee to England, lived as a felony fugitive for three years and returned to the U.S. in July 2006. Though
While Politicians Yap, Strickland Performs: The current issue of People celebrates Orange County’s Alena Strickland, 49, for taking in 112 foster children. Yes, 112. Even more impressive? According to the article, each child has had special needs such as autism, blindness and deafness. She doesn’t do it alone. Strickland has her retired restaurateur husband Philip Pedone by her side. What motives her? "I was faced with a need, I can [help], so what's my excuse not to?" she told the magazine.
According to an official inside the team-based mixed martial arts league known as the International Fight League, we will not have an Orange County team this year.
Last year, our local team-- the Southern California Condors--was coached by Brazilian MMA legend Laguna Niguel-based Marco "King of the Streets" Ruas and competed against teams of fighters from all over the country. However, IFL spokesman Jerry Milani says Ruas wasn't able to get a team ready this year in time to compete, but would
Canadian hip-hop duo The Chuds created this tribute to 2'9" martial artist Weng-Weng, and paired it with some video clips from the small actor's many films. The ladies can't seem to help themselves in his presence. . .
Can you blame them?
. . . rampage. Of course he does.
In what assorted Internet pundits are already calling the stupidest hit-and-run ever, Ultimate Fighting Championship superstar (and Irvine resident) Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, who was the subject of this 2007 Weekly cover story, was arrested yesterday in Balboa after slamming his truck into several vehicles, jumping a center divider and driving up onto a sidewalk, which forced several pedestrians to leap out of the way to avoid injury.
Apparently the reason fo

New York Post Page 6 columnist Richard Johnson reports today that retired porn star Jenna Jameson is having “Huntington Beach Bad Boy” Tito Ortiz's love child.
Well, at least we think it's Tito's. Pity the fool who is the father if it is not.
By the by, our image of Ortiz was shot by former Weekly staffer Luke Y. Thompson, who covered the North American Mixed Martial Arts Association Expo back in December on this very site.
It's unclear whether the amazing LYT will be invited into the la
Orange County prosecutors today charged professional fighter Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, the subject of a 2007 OC Weekly cover story, with two felonies and three misdemeanors for a wild July 15 incident in Costa Mesa.
According to Farrah Emami, spokesperson for the district attorney's office, the mixed martial arts fighter crashed into several vehicles and then fled responding police near the southbound 55 freeway and 19th Street. When cops caught up with Jackson, they say he was aggressively we
Better Than: Playing a game of Guitar Hero while blind folded.
It was a strange thing trudging up the steps of Disney's House of Blues to find an empty bar on the second floor. It's typically the first crowd you see before disappearing down the stairs to find a spot at ground level. But just minutes before Tricky (producer, trip icon and co-founder of Massive Attack) strolled on stage, you could practically run and slide across the floor on your knees and not hit a single person.
Maybe it's j
The LA Times, industry publications the Wrestling Observer and Sherdog and plenty of other sources report that autopsy results are leading authorities to believe that the deaths of an Orange County professional mixed martial arts fighter and his wife were exactly what they appeared to be when news broke yesterday: a murder-suicide.Justin Levens, 28, and his wife, Sarah McLean-Levens, 25, were found dead from gunshot wounds Wednesday afternoon at their Laguna Niguel condominium. TMZ is reporting that former UFC fighter Kimo Leopoldo was arrested this afternoon in Tustin after police discovered a "small amount of what is believed to be meth" in his car. What's interesting is what led them to search his car in the first place: He was dressed in a Long Beach police jumpsuit. He's still in custody, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department, and police are looking into how he got his hands on the uniform in the first place. He is scheduled to appear in court

Miguel SaavedraThe Long Beach woman featured in this LA Weekly story a month ago pleaded guilty today, along with her husband, to charges of forced labor for illegally harboring two Philippine women in her home and forcing them to work in her elder care businesses after tricking them into coming to the U.S. The women worked against their will for years at a time, and were threatened by Pelayo. Federal agents shut down the elder care homes in April 2008 after federal search warrants were served.
