  • Red (County) Herring

Tan Nguyen is an unfortunate, foolish, racist man who did and continues to do unfortunate, foolish, racist things. But who cares? Don't get me wrong, the issue deserves coverage, especially from OC's homegrown authority on all things Mexican. But Tan is drawing all eyes to him - journalists and bloggers, Republicans and Democracts, conservatives and liberals. And, of course, foaming-at-the-mouth racists. Seriously. Tan was never going to beat Loretta Sanchez. I suppose rallying the troops again

  • DeYoung and De Restless

Today we spoke with Cassie DeYoung, candidate for Orange County Supervisor. She has an uphill battle against Pat Bates, a former Assemblywoman and cog in the Republican Party machine. Bates has the support of Congressmen Ken Calvert and Gary Miller, the OC GOP, the Transportation Corridor Agencies, Assemblywoman Mimi Walters and pretty much everyone else who makes me nauseous. DeYoung on the other hand has earned her party's enmity for courting Democrats and detailing certain aspects of the lo

  • Mea Culpa, We Fuck-Uppa

There were two HUUUUGE mistakes in the virtual droolings below. First, in KEN CALVERT'S MOD SQUAD, we reported that OC Blog has always been behind state Senator John Campbell (R-Richy Richland) from the beginning of his quest for the 48th Congressional District seat. A close follower of Clockwork and OC Blog informed us that OC Blog first supported Assemblyman Dick Ackerman (R-Notso Welloffville), going so far as to brand Campbell as something of a Calvertesque Commie up until Ackerman dropped o

  • Rohrabacher, Big Oil: a Match Made in Hell

Ah, Huntington Beach with its smelly smokestacks, oily bathtub-ring-like shoreline and human waste bobbing in the ocean. What's not to love? Your congressman, the esteemed Dana Rohrabacher (R-Abramoff), certainly showed he's got your back, Surf City-zens, as he voted just last night to let those poor, starving, raggamuffin oil companies drill for natural gas off the California coastline. Unfortunately for you hicks, a higher slice of the rest of the House--including scores of members of Dana's o

  • Drilling Bit Players

Further proving that otherwise politically conservative Newport Beach has an environmental streak when it comes to its own shores (but no one else's): Rep. John Campbell (R-The Arches) joined Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Garden Grove) as the only members of the Orange County congressional delegation to vote against lifting the 25-year ban on oil and natural gas drilling off most of the Pacific and Atlantic coasts and the eastern part of the Gulf of Mexico. The legislation, which passed by a vote of

  • Something Stinks, 3 for 3

For good measure, we also received this link to a Washington Post article on Orange County congressman Ken Calvert (R-Riverside; his district includes southernmost Orange County) and Gary Miller (R-Diamond Bar; his district includes northernmost Orange County), along with House Speaker Dennis Hastert, making millions off the sale of separate land parcels they own near government projects overseen by the House. Here is the relevant section on our local reps: Last year, Calvert, the California Re

  • More Mud Flung at Local Reps

Five days after we pointed you to a Washington Post story on two ethically challenged local congressman, both got a curtain call for being among the 20 Most Corrupt Members of Congress. For their eyebrow-raising, borderline illegal land dealings, Reps. Ken Calvert (R-Riverside, but his district includes parts of South Orange County) and Gary Miller (R-Diamond Bar, whose district also takes in a chunk of North County) are ranked alongside such scoundrels as Katherine Harris (R-Florida), Rick Sant

  • Hypocrites Unite!

As everyone surely now knows, The Drudge Report has solved the Mark Foley mystery. As you know, Republicans are all about taking responsibility for one's actions. As they demonstrate here, they are indeed taking responsibility--for having an innocent "prank" about pedophilia (nice sense of humor, guys) fall into the hands of evil Democrats (oxymoron?). We just just picture Bill and Hill and Monica, hunched over the computer, copying, pasting and sending Foley's prank out to the masses. XXXXX DRU

  • 241 Toll Road Delayed Indefinitely

The 241 Foothill-South Toll Road extension that would have run through San Onofre State Park endangering wild life and costing tax payers $10 million, has been delayed indefinitely, according to Congressman Ken Calvert. In the Congressman's words, "thanks to Reps. Susan Davis and Loretta Sanchez (D-CA), a toll road project that has been years in the making has been set back indefinitely." Read Calvert's press release in its entirety here. Congress still has to approve the bill and President

  • Obey My Jowls!

Below is a video of Ken Calvert on his support of the 241 Toll Road. Nevermind that his reputation is on the line. Nevermind that he worked to garner earmarks (see Of Pork and Ken, Feb. 16 2006) so that taxpayer money could be spent on "environmental studies" for the toll roads - millions upon millions of taxpayer dollars, despite the Transportation Corridor Agencies' continual assurances that no taxpayer money will go to the CONSTRUCTION of the toll road - a legally defensible claim. But, just

Not exactly as sexy as water for chocolate, but still. Those crafty bastards over at Sunlight Foundation have cranked out the latest version of their watchdog tool for the Senate, Congress, committees, lobbyists and legislature: Open Congress. We've recently added more ways to access the info created by the public on OpenCongress: helpful comments, votes on hot bills, social networking about your interests, and more. To find out how these new features bring you closer to what's really happe

  • Cracking Open a Miller

Congressman Gary Miller (R-Diamond Bar) has jack-assed his way back into the news. Seems he owns $20,000 in toll road bonds. What's the big deal? Miller is a big-time toll-road supporter, putting his signature on letters of support to the project as well as garnering earmark after earmark of pork-barrel tax-payer dollars for the project, the completion of which is necessary for the return of Miller's money. The Register tried out a new tactic this week and actually did some reporting for a chan

  • Dick's Out

That's right, folks. Dick Cheney is in town today to attend a high-dollar fundraiser for fellow Republican Ken Calvert. You may remember Ken from his 1993 arrest for soliciting a prostitute in Corona. Or maybe it's from his 2006 designation by the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics as one of the "20 Most Corrupt Members of Congress" because of his use of earmarks for personal gain and his connections to lobbying firm, Copeland, Lowery, Jacquez, Denton and White, currently under federal inve

  • As Rep. Calvert Beams Over Gipper Statue, Many Fume

Courtesy U.S. Capitol"Ladies and gentlemen, the statue of Ronald Reagan," the announcer inside the Capitol Rotunda said last Wednesday before House Speaker Nancy Pelosi helped 87-year-old Nancy Reagan to her feet so she could tug back the blue drape cloaking Chas Fagan's 7-foot bronze statue of the Gipper. The audience rose to politely applaud. Among them were a bipartisan collection of the type of folks you'd normally see shouting each other down on the Sunday chat shows. From the right came for
