Starting Dec. 11, OC Weekly freelance photogrphaer Keith May is organizing an open-mike [sic] night on Tuesdays at Costa Mesa bar/restaurant La Cave.
May is hoping to spotlight aspiring singer-songwriters with his new venture. If you think you have what it takes to be the next Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell or Leonard Cohen, or if you just have a burning desire to fill the atmosphere with your own spleenfelt singer-songsmithery, get thee and thy acoustic guitar to La Cave on Tuesdays. The act
Santa Ana's The Crosby hosts High Class Low Life each Monday night, and last night, our photographer Keith May was there to capture it. Tachi Fujimori guest DJ'd, Hannah Kim played the piano, and even if you weren't there, you can check out the scene through Keith's slideshow right here.
Keith May was at the sixth OC Music Awards showcase last night at Chain Reaction in Anaheim, along with the Jakes, Western Front (formerly known as Bridgetown), Years and others. The proof? These pictures right here, of course! Enjoy.
A couple noteworthy shows took place last night, and we had photogs at both of them. Fever Dragon checked out British metal vets Cradle of Filth at the Grove of Anaheim, take a look at pictures of lead singer Dani Filth (above) and more, including opening band Satyricon here. Keith May was down south at the Coach House, taking pics at the sold out show with Laguna Beach's Donavon Frankenreiter and opening act Gary Jules. Those images? Here!
The OC Music Awards showcases did things acoustic-style last night, with their first of two shows from Costa Mesa's eVocal. Cory Case, Sarah Green, Poor Richards Press and Hong Kong Six all performed, and our guy Keith May was there taking pictures. Ch-check 'em out. The showcases return to eVocal next Tuesday, with performances from The New Limb, Daniel Morones, Francisco the Man! and Yellow Red Sparks.
Though I was nowhere near Orange County this weekend (celebrating the religious holiday of your choice up north), there was still plenty of OC Weekly representation at shows around town. Keith May took this lovely pic of legendary punk rocker Mike Watt, of Minutemen/countless other projects fame. The show was Friday at DiPiazza's in Long Beach, pics are here. Friday also saw LA's Lemon Sun and a gaggle of local OC acts (like the New Limb, the Jakes and Dolphin City, all of whom we've written abo
Newport Beach's The Jakes keep racking up local acclaim, and their latest venture is a month-long, KROQ-sponsored, Tuesday night residency at eVocal in Costa Mesa, where they're playing as well as hosting a variety of fellow bands from the southland. Things kicked off in earnest last night, with support from Saint Motel, Melanoid and Django James.I was there for a bit: the Jakes sounded as good as I've ever heard them (and I just saw them four days earlier at Heritage Park in Irvine). The entire
Keith MayEach Tuesday in May, Newport Beach's the Jakes will be playing--along with a rotating cast of bands from OC and beyond--at eVocal. And also each week this month, Sameer Gadhia, lead singer of the Jakes (pictured) will be sharing his thoughts on the shows. Here's the first installment:BY SAMEER GADHIAWelcome to the first of four blog spots that have been gifted to me by the local music enthusiasts at the OC Weekly who have helped generate buzz about our May KROQ "Locals Only" residency a
Keith MayIt's not easy to get people out on a Monday night, but make your event free and you'll definitely get some people. Case in point: the healthy turnout for last night's show at Detroit Bar, the second installment of the May residency by Huntington Beach bands Moostache (pictured) and Evening Hour. The bands are sharing more than just time on stage this month, they also share two members: keyboard player Bobby Waltman and guitarist Scott Zschomler. Moostache were featured in Locals Only ba
Keith MayAs you may already know: One of the Kogi trucks will be at the Santiago Art District Artwalk today,Saturday May 16th, 7-10PM.Rest assured: This one won't get cancelled or broken up by police. All the proper permits have been secured, etc. However, since Kogi made it to the front page of Yahoo! and MSNBC yesterday, you can also be sure it will get crazy up in there! You know those long lines I talked about in Thursday's print review? I bet we ain't seen nothin' yet!
Keith MayFor the second week in a row, Newport Beach's the Jakes played a free show Tuesday at eVocal in Costa Mesa. Makes sense, given that they're playing free shows every Tuesday at the venue this month. Also for the second week in a row: Sameer Gadhia, lead singer of the Jakes is sharing with us some thoughts on the night.BY SAMEER GADHIAWelcome to the second edition of my OC Weekly blog spot for the

B.B. King? In Dana Point? Oh, it happened. This weekend, in fact, at the Doheny Blues Festival at Doheny State Beach. You might have read Spencer Kornhaber's blog about the two-day event. (If you didn't, for shame, but your chance to make up for it can be found here.) But, when reading that, if you're thinking, "Hey, you know what would be cool to go along with these words--some pictures," well, we've got you covered. Keith May was out there doing the photography thing. The end result? Right her
Got a couple of slideshows worth checking out, if you're curious to see what type of shenanigans we were up to over the weekend. Keith May was up at the Grove of Anaheim for the OC Music Awards, where he captured such amusing images as the one above of Mickey Avalon getting down with some uh, dancers. Robert Fayette was over at day one of Bamboozle Left (hey, I was there too!), his pics are here. Yaysies!
Photo by Keith MayHear Vegan Mel roar! You were told this morning about the vow made by Melissa Sehgal, who also goes by Vegan Mel, to sit in a cage in Anaheim while her nude body was painted like a tiger. If you point your eyes in that direction, you can still make out the smoke trail produced when photographer Keith May high-tailed it over there for the voluntary assignment. The fruits of his hard labor are revealed in this quite-possibly-not-totally-safe-for-work slideshow.Sehgal is a member o
A lot of "residencies" going on around Orange County this month, huh? There's the New Limb and Stacy Clark Mondays over at Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa (see some pictures from the most recent installment of that here), and the Union Line (who we recently wrote about in glorious print here) doing their thing at the Gypsy Lounge in Lake Forest every Thursday in June. But we'd be remiss if we didn't talk about Handsome G--pictured, the band formerly known by the more complete name as Handsome Gr
Keith MayYou weren't at Detroit Bar last night? Oh, that's a shame. You missed out on some fun: balloons, crowns, birthday cake, The New Limb (whose Lauren Salamone is pictured here), Stacy Clark, a cameo from Cory Case, LA's Civalias, and, it's rumored, a certain alt-weekly music editor may have even been on stage at some point. Maybe. If you would like to peek into this glorious world for just a few fleeting seconds, check out Keith May's slideshow from last night here.
"We all know art is hard." That's what Cursive said, at least. They didn't play Saturday at the Tour Des Artistes in Long Beach, but a lot of other folks did. You might have read Nate Jackson's recap earlier today (and if not, why not, huh?), and if you would like to see some lovely, lovely pics to go along with that, check out Keith May's slideshow here. Also over the weekend? Andrew Youssef checked out Strung Out Sunday at the House of Blues Anaheim, and those pictures can be found right here.

The media was out there, and so was the circus.Anyone who marveled at the incisive journalism and expert photography displayed in the coverage of animal-rights activist Melissa Sehgal's nude protest over Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus' upcoming Honda Center run knows Navel Gazing took on a whole new meaning that June 25 morning.
One thing you did not marvel at was circus promoter Feld Entertainment's on-the-spot response, which through a commu

Keith MayAmerican Apparel approvedWho hates summer as much as we do? What? No one? Sure there's always tons of things going on every day and every weekend during these warmer months--but you're also moist like, the whole time. Or is that just us?We had a full weekend, as always. And it was so full it overflowed over to Thursday night! First up, photographer Keith May went and visited the First Annual OC Mud Run in Irvine, which is exactly what it sounds like--a bunch of grown adults and children
Keith MayNot a crook. What'd you do this weekend? Was it as short as ours? Thought so. Photographer Keith May continued his exploration of Orange County this weekend. This time he brings us that "OTHER" dog beach--it has no name, no leash rules, no cops and is relatively unknown. This dog beach sits at the mouth of the Santa Ana River at the border between Newport and Huntington Beaches. Dogs surf and frolic as their owners watch. There's even some casual dog surfing instructions most Sundays.
Keith MayKia was the runt of the litterAt an unincorporated no-man's land at mouth of Santa Ana River at border between Newport and Huntington Beaches sits a hidden dog beach--that other dog beach. While most automatically think of Huntington Beach's Dog Beach on Pacific Coast Highway, this one is a bit more secluded. It's so unknown, in fact, that even when photographer Keith May asked a lifeguard at 74 about it, he had never even heard of such a place. The beach has no name, no cops, no lea
Keith MayIn case you haven't noticed, Kogi has been making routine weekend stops in O.C. this month. Two Saturdays ago, it was Fullerton. This past Saturday, it was Orange. This coming Saturday, it will be Costa Mesa, at the Holiday Inn on Bristol near the 405, from 6 p.m.-midnight.When I rendezvoused with Kogi in Orange this past weekend at around 9:30 p.m., there was no line whatsoever -- a lucky break. I walked right up and told them what I wanted. It still took 20 minutes for them

Another weekend is gone, and do we even need to say once more that it was a busy one for the ol' OC Weekly? Well, you've probably already read the sterling review of the Offspring at Irivne's Verizon Wireless Amphitheater on Friday night by our guy David J. Nicolas. Oh, hello there. So what'd you miss this weekend this time?Well, first off: It was the annual nuuuurd pilgrimage to Anaheim Convention Center on Friday through Saturday--that's right, BlizzCon!The official gathering for all things Blizzard (you know, that giant video game company based in Irvine that's responsible for putting out everything from Diablo and Starcraft to World of Warcraft?) attracted thousands and thousands of attendees seeking the latest in news from the world of Blizzard--oh,
Beth StirnamanBadass gramps. We had quite possibly the shittiest weather for a weekend full of outdoor activities--with temperatures reaching into the triple digits, we spent our weekend, well, kind of constantly moist. But that's okay: We trudged on. For you, our readers. For. You.First up, on Friday and Saturday, OC Weekly photographer Beth Stirnaman braved the heat and hit up the San Diego Street Scene music festival. The two-day event featured everyone from M.I.A., Public Enemy (a brief si
Beth StirnamanDo you not know Chromeo by now? Really? Well, that's them up there, playing Street Scene in San Diego this past Friday night. They were awesome. Also awesome: Beth Stirnaman's photographs from day one and day two of the festival. It was like Coachella, but less people, not as many bands, but less time in the hot sun and in the middle of a lovely downtown area instead out in the desert in the middle of nowhere. So, an even trade? But Street Scene wasn't the only event we were all
Keith MayHell yeah, is that fall weather we detect!? So what'd you miss this weekend? The Fourth Annual Boston Buddies Tea Party took place at the always dog-friendly (complete with dog menu!) Park Bench Cafe in Huntington Beach on 9/12. It's exactly what it sounds like: A whole lot of Boston Terriers and their adoring owners, with some food and doggie costumes thrown in there. James CorbettA federal judge in Santa Ana has ruled that high school history teacher James Corbett--who former Weekly reporter Daffodil Altan wrote about here and here (with Gustavo Arellano on the latter)--is not financially liable for disparaging Christians in class.
The scoop is in today's Orange County Register.
Keith MayThree Vs and a Kirby.A fun, fun weekend, friends: What'd you miss? First off: The first ever Long Beach Comic-Con! Comic books fans of all ages made their way to the first ever Long Beach Comic-Con at the Long Beach Convention Center this weekend, 10/2-10/4. Music Editor Albert Ching checked things out, read his round-up posts here! Convention floor. Rorschach started to turn around like I was trying to take a picture of him. I was not. Poor guy.We hit the first-ever Long Beach Comic Con at the Long Beach Convention Center this past weekend, and it was a busier-than-expected, promising start, full of roller derby gals, dudes in costumes, pro wrestling and even some comic books. Keith May took some fab pics that are here, but if you'd like to see some iPhone pictures from a completely untrained photographer (me), well, re
Keith MayKogi's still going strong. This after countless knockoffs have taken to the road and naysayers have taken to the comment boards. Seriously, it seems that the number of vehement objections to their popularity is directly proportional to their popularity.
These days, it seems fashionable to be a Kogi hater (let's see how many I attract with this post).
Regardless, don't think that any of it will make the lines shorter.
But if your frustration with Kogi is that line, here's a tip

Seriously, what's scarier than an Insane Clown Posse fan? An entire venue of Insane Clown Posse fans. Observe:Chris VictorioWe're scared. On Sunday night, 9/27, Insane Clown Posse visited the Grove of Anaheim. And it was uh, insane. A Faygo massacre. The photos, they scare us. Chris VictorioThere's a Labor Day weekend tradition even more sacred than the Jerry Lewis telethon: the Orange International Street Fair, which this year took place September 4 through 6 in historic/beautiful/adorable/insert positive adjective here downtown Orange. Keith MayWatch and learnIt may have been 5,000-degrees out, but the weekend's events raged on regardless. From reminiscing with one of our favorite boy bands ever (what, you don't have one?) to watching a labrador retriever go down the line with more ease and comfort than any surf pro, we could barely decide on how to split our time over the weekend. On 7/11, the First Annual Surfin' Paws Surf Dog Competition took place at Huntington Beach's Dog Beach. Oh, it's as cute as it sounds. Follow phot
Keith MayAs we wrote about earlier in the day, eVocal, a least in its current form, looks not to be long for the world of westside Costa Mesa. Truly disappointing to be sure, but also a good opportunity to support the few shows the venue has left. One such show took place Saturday night, the CD release gig for local Parker Macy (pictured). Operating under his Parker Macy Blues name, the singer (pictured) celebrated his new, second album, Hope for the Revolution. Keith May was there, his pictures
Keith May Another week, another food festival at Mitsuwa in Costa Mesa. I'm kidding, of course. They don't happen that often. But they do happen more often than I remember. Not that that's a bad thing. It's good actually. Very, very good!
Just that maybe it'd be even better if they had these every weekend? Wouldn't that be nice? Rotate the vendors between stores so that we get to sample a different Japanese specialty every week?
