  • James Randal Ross (1926-2007)

Legendary outlaws and dirty jokes aren't typically mentioned in the obituaries of Superior Court judges in OC, but as the panel of judges who censured him in 1998 could have told you, James Randal Ross was not a typical judge. Ross, who served as an Orange County Superior Court judge from 1983 to 1995, died of a heart attack at his Fullerton home on Monday. He was 80 years old. Somewhat ironically for someone who served as a judge, Ross will probably be best remembered for his relationship to

  • LYT's Film Pick of the Weekend 10-5-07

It's hard to get all that enthused about some of the releases this week, but there's one that I'm definitely all fired up NOT to see. THE SEEKER: THE DARK IS RISING Remember back when Harry Potter was first going to be a movie, and it was suggested that Steven Spielberg would direct, with Haley Joel Osment in the lead, re-setting the action in America? • Murder, MySpace, Babysitters, Betrayal: The Best National True Crime Stories of 2007

They are the modern versions of monster stories. True Crime writers seek out such tales every day, finding them in two sentence-long police blotter blurbs, law enforcement sources lamenting the one that got away, or victims looking for justice. They pile on hours of research and interviews, building a case while crafting a narrative. But unlike campfire tales, these monster stories cannot be embellished. The tale must be told straight. And as you will read in this collection, no amount of creat

  • Oscar Nominations are announced

And yes, I'm up prior to the crack of dawn to get them to you. The biggest surprise, if you can call it that, is the strong showing by MICHAEL CLAYTON, with six nominations. Not so surprisingly, THERE WILL BE BLOOD and NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN each have eight. Via CNN, because it announced even before the official Oscar site: The nominees for best picture are "No Country for Old Men," "There Will Be Blood," "Atonement," "Juno" and "Michael Clayton." JUNO? Really? Just goes to show there's a ri

  • Porn and Taxes

Getting stiffed by a porn star took on a whole new meaning Monday when Huntington Beach's Janine Lindemulder was arraigned in federal court for allegedly failing to pay about $80,000 in income taxes, The Smoking Gun reports today. The racktacular 39-year-old entered a not guilty plea and was released without bail. A Sept. 16 trial was set. Smoking Gun's item includes a copy of the original charging document that was filed June 18 in U.S. District Court in Eugene, Oregon. Lindemulder, who moved
