  • The Continuing Story of Goat Boy, the Pesky Terrorist

If there's anything funny about the U.S. War on Terror and its hunt for al-Qaeda, it's the fact that nearly six years after 9/11, we still haven't been able to capture or kill Adam Yahiye Gadahn, a.k.a. Azzam the American, a.k.a. Goat Boy. At least that's what we've come to call Gadahn around the newsroom, ever since ABC reported in late 2004 that the masked al-Qaeda terrorist who'd appeared on videos that summer—in which he babbled about infidels and threatened America with a second 9/11—wa

  • Praying for Rain

If you're among the praying, the Council on American-Islamic Relations invites ye of any faith to join in a special prayer at the Islamic Society of Orange County in Irvine tonight at 6:30. The prayer of Salatul Istisqa is a call for rain usually offered in times of drought. "Americans of all faiths need to offer spiritual assistance to the courageous firefighters who are battling these deadly fires," said CAIR's executive director in a press release. I'd hate to rain on anyone's prayer-ade,

  • Man Claiming to be FBI Informant Spins Quite a Tale

A location scout for a spy movie could not have picked a better location for my late December meeting with Craig Monteilh: a table outside a restaurant in a bustling Irvine shopping center. A lensman would appreciate the shadow-erasing clouds hovering overhead on the warm winter morning. And central casting could not have found a better leading man: Monteilh is tall, intense, talkative, with a shaved head and the kind of cut body one would expect from someone who is now a fitness instructor.

  • Gaza's Dead Are Mourned at Interfaith Service

Participants in "Tears for Gaza -- an Interfaith Memorial Service" -- which begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Anselm of Canterbury Episcopal Church, 13091 Galway St., Garden Grove -- are asked to "dress in black as a sign of mourning over the reckless loss of human lives." A reception and fellowship follow the solemn observance remembering the lives of those killed in the recent Israeli siege of Gaza. Sponsors include SABEEL Orange County, Islamic Society of Orange County, Middle East T

  • Arab Christian Perspectives Sues Dearborn, Thin-Skinned, Likes Robert Morey, Hates Muslims

SaiegI thought I recognized the name Arab Christian Perspectives when I read this Orange County Register story about how the group recently filed a lawsuit in federal court seeking access to proselytize outside an Arab festival in Dearborn, Michigan. In 2004, I did a story about Christians who tried to convince Muslims outside the Islamic Society of Orange County in Garden Grove to leave their faith and join Christ. Among the groups? The Arabic Christian Education Center in Anaheim, which hosted
