All the great cities in America have great songs to go along with them; classic personifications that truly capture the city’s personality. New York City has "New York, New York" by Sinatra of course, Tony Bennett, with his brand of eternal class offered up "I Left My Heart in San Francisco." There’s Randy Newman’s, "I Love LA," which must have been written either ironically or at whatever time of day that there’s no traffic. Hell, even San Jose was honored by singer and Psychic Friend,

The U.S. Open of Surfing might bring obnoxious swarms of people to Huntington Beach every summer, but it also brings the world's best surfers, BMXers, skaters and motocross riders to town. The event spans over nine days which includes surf competitions for men, women, juniors and long boarders. The Open has a couple of boasting points which help secure that "Surf City USA" title Huntington snatched from Santa Cruz not too long ago: it's the only six-star Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP
The t-shirt in question? It's rare that we ever get a response from the offending party in our Hey, You! column, and even rarer to get a retort from the writer to said response. Yet that's what has seemed to happen with the Hey, You! of a couple of weeks ago, in which someone took a teenage girl to task for wearing a T-shirt with a picture of President Barack Obama with a monkey mask, and the white-power charade that followed in the parking lot of a Huntington Beach Albertson's.Last weekend, we r

I'm Brad. I grew up here in Orange County, surfing all our beloved beaches and points, from Seal Beach down to San Onofre. In "Wax On, Wax Off," I'll discuss the news, gossip, culture, sports and everything in between from Orange County's world of surfing, both in and out of the water. As a local surfer, I'll talk about the waves and beaches we love, the people we hang with and the places we work--speaking of which, this might be the busiest weekend of the year, so let's get right into it:This y
by John GilhooleyThis past weekend, our coast was bombarded with the biggest waves we've had in a year. Rumors raged across the county of freak triple overhead closeouts, broken leashes and far worse. We all shuddered and thought of our own near-death surfing moments when we heard that Monte Kevin Valentin, a 50-year old bodysurfer who came in from Lawndale, was beaten against the jetty at The Wedge and died.
But while ragged bands of sunburnt locals with wide eyes and boards on their cars we
The Orange County surf world's long relationship with its most famous, most consistent surf break has been fraught with tension and battle. The long struggle against the toll road and the locally led, grassroots resistance movement that coalesced into Surfrider's "Save Trestles" campaign have drawn the most media attention. But here in Orange County, there is always something to fight over at Lowers. There's no feeling in the world like competing with 40 other dudes for makable corners in waist-
We in the surfing world don't often talk about the economic downturn that has plagued America in recent months. Sure, there are more guys out in the water during work hours, having lost the jobs that used to keep their days filled. Surfboard sales are at rock bottom (the relatively small manufacturing industry can barely support itself). The stock of many public action sports companies, perhaps most notably Quiksilver, has plumetted. Your mags might feel a little thinner due to a l

I've continued to ask local surfers to share their thoughts and experiences on surfing-related violence in Orange County. Here are some additional thoughts that have come in since yesterday: "Orange County is just as bad as anywhere else. Some 40 year old man tried to drown me at the [Huntington] Pier when I was 16. I dropped in on him and called him a kook, but I was just a kid."
"It seems like there is a link between poverty and violence and we live in a bubble
